Scorpion 7.5

Looking for a trailer for a 7.5 scorpion!
One question dose it realy weigh
"Weight of hull and tubes 2,000kgs"
If so with outboard & fuel I'm looking at over 2500kg which rules out most trailers!

Hi Nick

Which Scorpion did you go for in the end? RM trailers seem to supply most of the trailers for the Scorpions I've seen so probs best to go there first.

Nick, we have an SBS trailer for Blue Ice. Good choice of RIB.

Edit: just looked at our website for details: it's an 8m trailer, weighing 680kg with a maximum payload of 2800 kg. Richard reckons the all up weight (boat & trailer) is about 2000kg. Hope that helps.

Are they alright then?
So dose it really weigh in at 2500kg +???

We're very happy with the trailer. Bear in mind Blue Ice is a bit of an old girl now. I would think the newer Scorps are probably heavier because of features such as the console seat, wraparound rear bench seat and raised anchor locker.

Hi

I have just taken delivery of a new 8.5 metre Scorpion with a Verado 275 which is a very heavy lump indeed. GJ at Scorpion reckons that including trailer and about 50 gallons of fuel I will be at about 2600kgs, with a trailer nose weight of approx 80 kgs, yours will be lower and so get you below the magic 2500kgs.

thanks for the replies, its going to be a big jump from Rosie rib, as I can fit her on the drive man handle her around on the trailer by my self!
I do not think I will be doing that with 2500kg

I think you should be OK. I used to launch an 8.1 by myself, the trailers are very good and roll on off well.

I have a Scorpion 7.5 with closed deck, cockpit and two seats in the back. Engine of 238kg and usely 400 liters fuel. Don’t know the total weight but do the trailering all by my self. I use a trailer with a carrying-capcity of 1750kg. The combination is great driving around.

For a year or so I winched it by hand, now I use an electric Powerwinch with a strap. We have a very steep slipway in the harbour and I am 63 years old. I had to work out how to do it by myself:

I changed the bow support on the trailer, put some hooks on for the painter and added a gangway on the trailer. Put the spare wheel flat down to stand on. I use a long painter of 12m. To collect the boat I drive the trailer in the water with the adjusting wheels just above the surface, so the boat can’t drift away. Then I pull the keel between those wheels and fixate the painter to the trailer. Then I put the strap on the boweye using a devise (a stick with a clamp) because the eye is to far down. After pulling the boat in I use an extra rope for security.

The pictures below show the whole process: nr.1 going down the slipway - nr.2 two ropes to be secure - nr.3 controled sliding down - nr. 4 pulling the boat in between the adjusing wheels - nr.5 the electric winch with strap.

Great system you have there, Mark. (63 - no way!)

Alternatively you could do it the easy way like we do and dry berth. That way, someone else does the launching/recovery.

Hope all is well with you and family, Mark.

We considered buying a 4x4 to enable us to trailer Blue Ice but then baby Thomas came along so boating hasn't figured figured much this year! We're still not sure whether to go for a 4x4 as our second car. Everytime I think Richard has decided, he changes his mind!

You have an amazing area to explore over there in Holland. Would love to come over there sometime and do some cruising but I think we'll wait until Thomas is a little older.

Blue Ice, IIRC weighs 2250kg all up on the trailer. The previous owner to me, John Lancaster weighed her on a weighbridge. The SBS trailer that she is on is a very heavy duty piece of kit and is really too big for the job. On long runs she tows much, much better with 60 galls of fuel in the tank than empty!
In fact I wouldn't tow her lightly laden as she was too bouncy for my Isuzu Trooper 4x4. (Which I did try to sell to Richard as a package deal btw ).

So you could definately get away with a lighter weight trailer. All up weight is still going to be in the region of 2000kg I'd say. I have launched her solo on a few occasions. It just requires a bit of time and forward planning. For manoeuvering around the drive John L had a petrol or electric driven trailer buddy thing that connected to the trailer and provided the power to manoeuvre the trailer around the drive. I believe this connected to a fitting near the jockey wheel.

IMHO the 7.5m Scorp is an excellent balance of trailability and an excellent seaworthy RIB. The high tubes/deep deck make it feel very secure for the family and of course the ride and handling is sublime. But then I am biased!
