Scillies

I fancy a camping holiday in the scillies - and I want to take the RIB.
Any one been - what mooring or harbour facilities are there ... and i have to consider if I might get stranded by weather!!

I Have always found Bryher best for a camping and boating trip . the campsite is only a short walk from the beach and quay .

Anchoring in the channel just off the Quay between Bryher and Tresco is pretty good , and you can rent a mooring in the channel if you prefer at a reasonable price .

the campsite is fantastic with nice showers etc , and the Fraggle Rock is a stones throw away for good food and drink .

fuel On St Mary's is expensive as would be expected .

You could well get held up by the weather so be prepared to sit it out .

it not as quiet as some of the Scottish islands but probably as close as you can get in terms of stunning scenery etc .

RIBase
Went in 2005 and had a fantastic long weekend.

Stayed at Garrison camp site on St Marys. Very helpful and friendly.

Moored in the harbour on a buoy - harbour master very helpful also. One of our fleet had a SIB to get ashore from the buoy.

Watch the Fraggle Rock, I don't think there's a clock in the place. Dangerous. Are you on for a trip this year Parkesy, in the 'Tupperware Tub'?

There's a cruise to the Scillies being organised for end May. Don't know if it's of interest to you, but here's the thread anyway...

Anyone coming this way give me a shout.

You can camp on St Mary's - Ted runs the Garrison.
Bryher - Bryher Boats and all the other companies they run.
St Martins - not sure who.
St Agnes - not sure who.

Permanent moorings can be rented off Bryher and St Marys.
St Agnes have permanent moorings but don't know how much or who to speak to.
St Martins hotel has a few moorings available to rent.

Bring a small tender tho' as tides can be up to 6m change.

I'm always up for a beer, Pimms, glass of wine etc.

We use Bryher, it is perfect. On St. Marys you'll have to mix with Emmits.

As said : fuel expensive and has to be decanted from jerry cans unless you arrange for a gravity feed from a IBC from the fuel suppliers...ie 100 litres plus

Bryher has good anchorage for ribs close in and also plenty of moorings.

St Martins campsite is right on a lovely flat expansive beach which can be anchored on but you'd have to get the boat off at 2 hours before till 2 after LW if you want to use it over that period.

Be wary of weather conditions as they can change quickly with steep short waves in tide against wind conditions making ribbing "exciting" to say the least.

Know how to read a chart/plotter well and know the tidal ranges as very often i see evidence of boats that "just check that the rock was actually there" or "oh yeah that is a sand bank"

Apart from that its a great place for exploring and beaching for picnics.

I'd suggest in your trip: picnic on little arthur (half tide ebb) reveals a lovely little beach in a cove Nice in easterly wind as its sheltered.

beach the rib on ganilly bar at LW for a play on a sand bar.

Appletree bay or pentle bay (both tresco) at HW for water sking dependant on wind direction

Samson for a evening BBQ and watch the sunset from the top (i didn't say that bit as no naked flames but use your descretion)

When the weather is good (no sign of fog) and fuelled up with good safety kit...trip out to the bishop rock lighthouse (6nm) and then back in through the western rocks ....You'll need to be confident in your nav skills for this bit......past the gilstone (site of the association wreck, rosevear where the men lived when they built the lighthouse -you can still see the gable ends, plenty of seals, puffins and usually dolphins, sharks etc)

I'm biased as i live here but its a great place to own a rib.

so if you get over then say hello if you see a blue ribcraft 6.8 with a suzuki 250 on it.
If your stuck don't hesitate to ask

pete

ps

if you get stuck the rib can be transported back to penzance by ship (sc3 or gry)

i may be wrong having never done it with anything bigger than a sea kayak but I guess they would lift the boat out of the water onto the ferry and then drop it back in the water when you get back , then you would just have to motor across penzance harbour to your trailer and the slipway , about 200 yds .

It used to be scary watching them crane sea kayaks on at 5m long and balanced on a small pallet , but no harm ever came to them .
