My reading of the Irish statute on Offensive Weapons doesn't allow for any pointy objects without reason, one defense being for "recreational purposes". I guess that doesn't include teasing the locals.

I don't have a safety knife on the boat -- just wondering what are the chances I'd need it (and therefore the relative priority compared to all the other 'stuff' I might accumulate)?

Anybody had serious cause to cut stuff away (other than wet denim)?

I reckon I can swing "using my knife to annoy English lads" as recreational purposes

I've had a couple of scares where I picked up ropes on the outboard - didn't wrap though but made me think. I've had to cut a couple of mono lines, one that caught on me personally as I was approaching a pier.

All served to persuade me that a knife on my person was going to be vital some day.

I have a small stainless knife attached to the waistband of both our Lifejackets and never worried about walking around with it on view.
All you need os goo reason and the fact it is actually attached to a very obvious piece of boating gear seems to sort it out, unless you happen to go clubbing and take the LJ with you so you can carry a knife!

Oh yeah, missed the spike bit

For those who like spikes, the Myerchin Sailor's tool is nice as it has pliers too. Getting into multitool terrain tho...
