RYA Kill cord survey

https://www.research.net/s/killcord

Please take a moment or two to answer these questions on kill cords, kill switches and any issues you have had with them.

Thank you

Floatyourboat,

Do you know what the agenda is (there's always an agenda!) and why it's not on an RYA url if it wants rya credibility?

I'd be slightly concerned before answering that with such a directed line of questioning it self selects for people who have had an issue, skewing any stats.

So if I answer "No, neither" do I leave out the rest of the questions, or somehow give the details of every boat I've owned?

Hi Poly, people often report issues to the RYA. The kill cord wearing message has been going for years, but not so much is said about care of kill cords and switches. It's difficult to understand the extent of any switch or kill cord integrity issues without asking the wider public.

Thanks for taking the time to look at the survey.

It's put together on survey monkey which is why it's not an RYA URL.

If it's no neither the info of your current boat would be useful. If nothing else those who haven't had a problem may be down to how the boat is kept or the kind of kill cord used.

Thanks for looking at it though

I maybe wrong but I smell a survey for market research for selling something that isn't needed, like a 100 quid kill cord made of moon dust or something equally as daft.

TBH waste of time filling it in unless someone has had a failure.

Cheers

It could end up being used to support some expensive / complicated type of kill switch, or perhaps it will show that a simple one just works if almost no one gets past the first question.

It could be used for anything. It's a valid method of data collection if used correctly.

The survey does really need a 'home maintained' option though. An awful lot of people do their own work on their boats.

RYA Kill cord survey

If you have never had a failure (as I haven't) just complete first question then scroll down to the done button

If only failures get reported then a false negative will be reported.

I think there a number of flaws in the whole "survey design". Not least that it doesn't ask if the kill cord is (a) routinely used (b) routinely tested - so the total number of failures is abstract. Even more significantly it also seems to make no understanding of the consequences of a failure. It is a very different problem having a fail to start on the pontoon than adrift at sea, or not killing the engine in a MOB etc.

Its odd because Survey Monkey is much more powerful than it is being used for here.

Does anyone know the originator or the purpose of the survey? All seems a little amateur for an established company / organisation.
Reminds me of school / early Uni surveys...

I'm surprised that some of you guys have never had one fail. I've had a couple of them die ......they're cheep cr*p. Maybe it's just because my budget doesn't run to shiny new boats out of the showrooms but I've just replaced another one last week (fitted a bypass switch rather than carry a spare cord). Regardless of their agenda I think there's scope for someone to come up with a better, more reliable solution.

You dont have to buy a new boat to get a new kill cord, and if you buy cheap crap what do you expect?

Have a search on here there are many threads with discussions on a "better" solution

within first 40 seconds its described
