Round Ireland Record Attempt 2009

Team Pulsar announced today that they will attempt the Round Irish Record in 2009.

Having practically collapsed with boredom after completing every stage of the Round Britain Offshore Powerboat race this summer a new challenge was required.

The Team is preparing a new build Humber Quinquari & powered by Suzuki with some interesting additions to get us around. (Mad crew)

Ullman seats remain a very important part of our repetoire on Vampire.

I simply remind myself that during the RB08 campaign we used Shockwave on Wolf and they were a major ass-et (excuse the pun).

Simply a reference to the importance of Shock mitigation.

Getting off the boat and being able to walk to the Pub is always nice to do.

What record are you going for, Dag Pikes or Garth Henry's? Garth did it less than 24 hours back in 2004

RB08 would have been a doodle compare to going around Ireland, you really do need to get the weather right if you want a reasonable chance of beating Garths record.

Alan,
I had no idea that an official record actually existed for circumnavigating Ireland under UIM regulations.

Several people have gone around including Mick Shanahan and Philip Fitzgibbon last year in 19 hours 27 minutes, but as such none are official.

Seems I was mistaken.

Can you point me to where these records are officially recognised as it is obviously important. 24 hours should be achievable, and yes, fine Irish weather and a little luck would also help.

You are right, there doesnt appear to be an "official" record so go for it. I dont think for one minute Dag will like it as he has always maintained that he is the "Official" record holder. I think he went around in Windy back in 1992
I dont know if you are interested but Peter G is holding a big Ribsters Xmas bash in Donagadee on the 5th December. There is rumour that a lot of the old gits are coming back out of retirement for a meet upto discuss the 10th Aniversary of the Rib Raid. Alan P

thanks for the info on the records, have all that, but the Kerry boys still rule for now.

Spent the day in Valentia yesterday looking at a very interesting new RIB. The Kerry Boys will be having a go at making there record official in 2009 and will of course be something to aim for.

Dag, you need to come out of your suggested retriement after your amazing success at RB08 and have one final go around Ireland.

Should be fun next year. Cork V Kerry........... :-)

On the 28th of august 2007 we (Phillip Fitzgibbon and co pilot Mike Shanahan)set the first and only official record around ireland in my 7.5 modified tornado hull powered by 250hp Suzuki in 19 hours 13 minutes and 16 seconds.
It has been ratified by John Puddifoot, powerboat racing manger of the RYA. The reason the RYA ratified the record is that officilly, the RYA governed the republic of Ireland until this year, 2008. The ISA (Irish sailing association) is now officilly over power boating records in Ireland.The man to contact in the ISA is Denis Dillon, his email is denis.dillon@sailing.ie. In the April/May 2008 edition of the Afloat magazine there was a five page article on the record that I hold, should anybody be interested in reading it. There was a photo of the official certificate from the RYA signed by princess Anne (The president of the RYA) I have been told that it can take time for UIM to process the paperwork. Hope this clears up any confusion regarding official records held for the around Ireland record.
Before my trip the holder, as far as i know, was Garth Henry, Portrush in 21hours 54 mins official or not, it still was the record in my eyes.

Mike Shanahan is preparing to have a stab at it this coming season in his own 8.5m Valentia rib powered by twin 300 e-tec

800 miles is alot different than 200miles at a time, no hotels, no sleep, no breaks at
40.96mph average not bad for a small rib with realistic horse power

I saw the set-up...... I reckon your missing one thing when your driving...... A big horn on the back seat to wake Mick up. The set up with the seats is so comfortable we'll probably find you asleep somewhere off the Aran Islands.

And dont get me started on the fridge and the kettle. Sher, where would you be going.

By the way good luck. I offered Mick some kit so let me know if you want to take me up on it. We are happy to stand on Dunmore East and time you going buy. You may have to provide the watch, the Cork ones may not be fast enough. :-)
