BUT I'd think it would be better to adjust the slow warn and CPA/TCPA settings (same menu) to get the number of false alarms to as low as possible. not sure what the optimal setting for the slow warn would be possibly 1kt default.

CPA - you need to decide how close you want another boat to get before warning you of a collision. You are in a highly mobile boat so I'd be surprised if you need much more that 0.2nm? Travelling at 30kts tats 1 kt ever 2 minutes. If the other vessel is doing the same you are down to 1kt of seperation every minute. 0.2nm would give you about 12 seconds warning. Thats probably a bit close!! So you might decide 2 minutes would be more comfortable. So set the TCPA as 2min.

If I understand it correctly you then would get an alarm if:

1. A vessell is within 0.2nm and on a collision course with you
2. A vessell is on a collision course with you and will collide within the next 2 minutes
3. A vessell is anywhere within the 0.2nm area and travelling at less than 1kt so possibly drifting or at anchor and so direction information is wrong.

Yes of course your right - I do just want to alter the sensitivity.
Have to familiarise myself with the settings on the AIS, so your advice above is well received - thanks

Assuming that most of the other Ribs will have an AIS - crusing in company will probably kncok the alarm into overdrive! even with a 0.2nm proximity setting.
Yesterday was at least 6 nm of visibility, and with the alarm setting on 6 nm! every ship at anchor off the Tees was alarming the AIS.

Hi - with just a couple of exceptions - every hotel / B and B / or Farmhouse where I am going to be staying is going to involve a taxi ride from the boat.
Not a long taxi ride, but further than I intend to walk!
If I couldnt get somewhere to stay close to the boat, I went for the next biggest town, so I know they will have a taxi!!

Interesting question - how many will have? Wasn't mandatory kit was it?

But unless I misunderstand you only get an alarm if your paths will cross. So two ribs 50ft appart side by side on identical course (i.e. both travelling at 045degrees) shouldn't sound an alarm. If your mate moves forward of you I think thats OK, but the moment he changes course so that he crosses your expected path you should ping an alarm if he does that within the zone....

Fully expect you'll need to fiddle with the settings unless there is someone on here who can tell you what works well already...

Thats cauze they'll have met the slow warn criteria - i.e. they were within your 6nm alarm zone, and because they were doing less than 1nm/hr their GPS course ifnromation is considered unreliable so it defaults to 'safe' to warn you they might be headed towards you.

AIS collision alarm is a waste of time. Even on maximum setting if there is a stationary vessel in a harbour that you're approaching it goes off. I would encourage you to simply switch it off..

Is there a specific reason you went with that separate AIS display? I would have thought simply feeding the data into the plotter would have been simpler, I'm pretty sure it can deal with it.. plus Garmin have just introduced an "always off" setting for the alarm

Hi there
The AIS is linked to the 750 as well. Where I went wrong is not getting the 750S as have had to add the clipper depth sounder.
If anyone is looking at a 750 they should factor that in to their decision.
Separate AIS display, just in case I lose the use of the Garmin for some reason.
Cant wait to get back to the boat and do some tinkering.

I can't see many "proper" campsites near the overnight stops, but I'm hoping HMS will have some contacts in each place who'll be willing to let us use their garden or field for a night!

Yesterday I was still swimming between all medias and found on the forum of the challenge that agreement has been made with another marina 6km from Milford haven so now I don t know from where we re starting the challenge if we can leave cars in a secured place in Milford haven or neyland ...I m waiting for a reply from the organisation

On the website Michaela wrote on 10th of July Neyland Marina and provided the contacts of James Cotton - the harbour master .
Talked to him 2 days ago as for parking for car / trailer and berth for one night .

just got an answer from the havenmaster. looks perfect, clear not clear maybe its me but ... milford haven is not neyland ...as i will have my car its not a major issue, but if you got this without a car and you book a hotel at 6km ....it s gonna be less funny right ?

I did not asked particularly this question and on the website Michaela writes just "the marina is fully aware and expecting the teams and have kindly offered to look after cars & trailers"
James just said it is no prob to park cars & trailers
As for berth number he asked me to call before I arrive

BTW - just changed from Lord Nelson to Ferry House Inn - it's closer
