Round Ireland 2009

Hi All,

I am looking into organising a round Ireland trip to fundraise for both the RNLI and trips away to help in Slums / Orphanages around the world. I plan to go around in a quicksilver 3.8 with a 20-25hp, there will be 2 of us doing the challenge, and we hope to do it in 60-70hrs pretty much non-stop, I have calculated the fuel needs and have arranged land support to follow us and meet up at different places along the way, I have 12yrs experience driving RIBs and other boats, I am a qualified powerboat Instructor and a member of the Civil Defence, I just want to see what ye guys think of the challenge, your views and comments...

Its all for a good cause! I may even be registering as a charity to support the trip and do various other "challenges" to help various organisations.

This Is the 3.8m Quicksilver we will be attempting our challange in, I own a 4.3m with a 40hp and have no complaints about the boat, have tried and tested it and i believe it to be well up for the job

Well it's certainly a challenge. My personal view is that you are barking mad and don't have a chance in hell of doing it in the time you have allocated.

Don't let that put you off though! In fact I'll donate £100 to the independent lifeboat organisation of your choice if you complete it in under a week.

Good luck. Just don't end up as a rescue statistic . . .

There is no way at all that you will be able to do the challenge in that time. Far better, take half a month of work and go round slowely picking your days on weather etc. You will find the west coast of Ireland very hard, at night in such a small tender is bordering dangerious. If you pick your days you could explore the wonderful inlets and coves available to you in such a small craft and slowly make your circumnavigation.

Being a novice to RIB'ing in general even i was surprised to see what you are using? Fine if you can get really close up to shore but then not everywhere is fine sandy beaches around the West Coast of Ireland, rocks and stuff get in your way! The distance is 1970miles which means you would need to do an average (give or take) 24knots or there about to achieve your 70 hour time??

andre - I think you are bonkers. I have a boat that size with a similar engine and I think it probably could make it round in good weather but unless its less than a F2-3 with minimal waves its going to be physically very tough and will call for a lot of endurance (for you and the boat). With only 1 boat and 2 crew it sounds very tough and I doubt you can do it in 3 days.

However I think it sounds like an excellent challenge. Good luck.

It is approx 900nm around, at 20kts it works out as roughly 45hrs, allowing for sea conditions and refueling id say 70hrs, That was one idea, the other is to break it into two legs at 24-30hrs a leg

Admittedly thats literally probably walking round the coastline but then i suppose its how close u want to sail along the coast.

In my experience with 2 people, the fuel, gear etc you will want on boat 20 knots will be very close to max speed with a 20HP engine. Thats only tolerable in a flat calm (otherwise you are slamming into every wave). 15-16 is a sustainable cruising speed upto about F4 / 2ft-ish waves. 10-12 is more likely beyond that (and it will be wet and tiring).

With say 2 fuel tanks you will probably have a range of about 8-10 hours. Just meeting up with someone and refilling those tanks will take at least 1/2 an hour each time. Probably more likely an hour allowing for cock ups with where they meet you and cathcing up on weather or other info they might have for you plus fixing any bits needing fixed on the boat.

So assuming you could manage virtually non stop (no rest) it would be 60 hours moving, with approx 7 hours for fuel stops. You'll need to eat and drink too and while you can do it on the move - its not going to be fun doing that for 3 days.

So even without sleep I think you will be pushing it to do the trip in 70 hours. And I think sleep will be essential (and unless its flat calm you won't get any on board). Doing it in a week in that size boat would be impressive, more feasible, more sensible but still a serious challenge.
