The mentor and the apprentice!

By now you will have read Trev’s (Trevor G) name several times all the way through this and there’s several reasons for this. Trev has been my cruising mentor for several years, he helped me arrange my first cruise around the Isle of Wight and we have also crossed the English Channel from Southampton to the Channel Islands and again to France. I’ve seen his son Rick grow from a lad into a young man and we have enjoyed countless amounts of local cruises together. Trev has taught me a great deal about long range cruising and all this preparation is really paying off on this trip.

Trev has also put this entire trip together with help from some of the others and he has ensured that everything is going well and he’s doing a great job! On top of this he has changed his power steering pump twice with Adam (Bembridge Marine) & (Team Duma), once in a lock and again last night on the pontoon.

You got to hand it to Trev, the guy’s a legend!!! And that’s probably why he’s the secretary for BIBOA (British Inflatable Boat Owners Association). Trev has been cruising with people that set world records in ribbing for years.

I was with Trev in my first force 8 gale and fondly remember ripping not one, but two stainless steel handles off of Blue Ray while holding on! Although, Trev may have a slightly less fond memory of this???

Here's a pic of Trev (second from the right - Red Jacket)

Now today we're off to Lowestoft, and I've got a good feeling!

There's loads of wind farms and although I've got some pics they could have been better...

I'm no David Bailey and I only have an iphone, but I'm sure we can do Better!

It's still windy and as always, the east coast chop is a pleasure to be in. The best way to describe it is:

It's like falling down the stairs for 10 hours

But the sun's out and it's not as bad as yesterday...

Total milage for Round Britain is 1,800 nm

Total milage for Round Britain via the Caledonian Canal is 1,600 nm

Fuel is harder to find on the east coast so you have to fill up where you can get it, forget the cost as 1,600 nm miles of petrol in a 7m with a 250hp on the back is loads, thats why we cruised at around 30 knots.

Some places were over £2 a Litre!

I'm off up the pontoon and into the hotel like a flash!

When we arrive back in Southampton Jurgen has to drive 1,000 km home! so he needs to be well rested!

I find rooms for about £23 a night in the Yacht Club Many of you haven't seen me moonwalk but this was one of those times...

Most of us are in the Yacht Club tonight so we all relax with a beer, all a bit beaten by the wind and chop..

Our land support leaves us today (Code Name: Transit) and they have been great. They used their holiday to tour Scotland and England along our route and have been there for us travelling 1,000's miles. They even drove about 200 miles to pick up Trev's power steering pump...

Mrs G and Miss G also arrive to meet us for dinner

Rick G's not well though, he's been traveling by road today as he's caught a bug. Now for those who know Rick will know that he can sleep on a bench seat at 40 knots and sleep through most weather so if he's not in the boat, then he's really not great and sadly he decides to go home

This is our very own Rick G who has been helming his dad's 8.6m rib for years and is a credit to his parents.

He also circumnavigated Ireland in 2013 with his dad Trevor G in a 4.7 Searider named Baby Blue...

And also most of Round Britain

Well done dude

While having a beer I decided to tell the group about the Red Sands Forts (that were on my RB list) but I didn't know where they were and when we looked them up they were a bit out of our way so we decided not to go. We needed to pick up fuel on our way to Ramsgate so it really didn't work well at all.

They are still on my list though

Here's a quick bbc video of the forts from 2005
