I can't think of a reason why anyone would go round the outside of Islay, so my guess is that they will all come up to the east of Jura.

A position between Scarba and Luing would probably be a good bet if you want to go that far north, or close in to the south west point of the Mull of Kintyre if you're staying south. They could feasibly go either side of Gigha, but it's more likely that they'll pass just to the west - that might be another good spot.

thanks John,

I am hoping/planning to be in tayvallich (Loch Sween) so will probably have Carsaig (mainland not mull) as my vantage point. If the weather is very nice may even pop the boat in the water. I guess that by then the field will be quite split up so may be best to stay "local" to our cottage where Mrs P can entertain the kids if they are bored, watching for a couple of hours.

By my reckoning they'll be a mile or more offshore by the time they get as far north as Tayvallich, but Keilmore might be a good bet for viewing from the shore as they should come in reasonably close.

testing today based out of Southampton dry stack. Looking at around 63 knts. Large selection of props still to try. Will be on the water again tomorrow. What communication device are people using. I've always used interphone. Seems very good. So many little things to do still though.

1. MARINERS ARE HEREBY advised that legs of the Round Britain Powerboat race will finish and begin at Milford Haven.

2. On Sunday 22nd June 2008 the East Channel will be closed to commercial traffic between 1200 and 1800. The incoming boats will use a line drawn between Rat buoy and E Chapel buoy as the finish line (approximate position 51° 40'. 85 N 005° 08'W).

3. Boats will approach at full speed until the finish line and then slow to a maximum of 20kts to proceed in single file to Carr Jetty (approximate position 51 41.'9 N 004 57.5 W) where they will berth to pontoons overnight.

4. There will be 40-50 boats of lengths between 15m and 7.5m.

5. On Monday 23rd June 2008 the East Channel will be closed to commercial traffic between 0830 and 1100 to allow the start of the next log.

6. The boats will leave Carr jetty at 0830 and proceed down river, max speed 20kts, to Dale Roads anchorage (approximate position 50° 42'N 005° 07'W) and will "muster and circle" until their start times.

7. There will be two starts, at 0930 and 1000. The boats will start from Rat/East Chapel buoys proceed down the East Channel before heading west. Keeping to the South of St Ann's buoy.

8. A committee boat will attend the start finish line at all times and will monitor VHF Ch 12.

If the 3 metre swell we have at the moment stays, that'll make things a bit more interesting.
I suspect I might go and camp out near East Blockhouse (Angle) to see them arrive on Sunday afternoon....

Will ask the office staff to keep the spellcheckers on as well - "5. On Monday 23rd June 2008 the East Channel will be closed to commercial traffic between 0830 and 1100 to allow the start of the next log."

Hi Alex - I was thinking of watching them coming into St Anns on Sunday pm, then somewhere offshore on Monday, depending on conditions.
Do you know if there's anything shorebased on Sunday evening in connection with the race?

had some problems yesterday. Wiring and electronics on fly/by/wire unit down to 55 knots full of fuel and gear today maxed out after breifing at 59knots. Hopefully no more problems. Will up date.

Yeah, the forecast is now looking slightly better for Sunday, so Sea Drive might make it onto the water afterall....

I think there is an event on the Sunday evening, but I think it's an invite only thing + I am not sure anyone can go down and have a look at the boats either since it's all in a secure area of the port at Pembroke.
Will ask around at work today and see what's happening if I can.

Just got back from watching the start. Was quite a spectacular sight watching all those boats razzing along the seafront! Three boats came back to Gunwharf with problems, the first being Ocean Pirate the big cruiser. They seemed to think they'd hit the submarine barrier and lost one of their props. The other two are down in the marina now frantically trying to fix their problems! Must be gutting if you've spent all that time and money on a project for it to fall apart literally at the last second. Pics to follow....

PS. Forgot to mention the HOT Silverline girls on the pontoon! Anyone get any pics

Was on a different Media Boat...HMS Gloucester...thanks to the Royal Navy. Just as well I had a big lens as the competitors passed closer to the shore at Gilkicker Point than us.
10 mins after the start it looks like Fabio Guzzi has problems as he stopped having creamed through the fleet after a conservative start.

First start had the spectator boats 'racing' alongside the competitors down the Solent. The organisers thought this to be dangerous so moved the start point from off Southsea to Gilkicker for the 2nd start. No doubt the spectators at Southsea were a bit hacked off with that as there seemed to be a large crowd there.
