"you can slip knot up a length of rope and use that as painter - a knotted rope this way is about 4 times shorter!"

I'm not with you sorry. What do you mean by this? 4 times shorter than what? Something 4 times it's length I'm guessing........

I use a large length with lots of special slip knots on it to make it shorter than boat....I am 90 miles away from boat so can't post picture...it's a series of loops and you pull it the loops come out but you lock it off...

regards

he means that you could put a 15m bow line on, and do a chain knot along it to make it physically 5 metres long unless you undo the chain.

Ooops
Maybe, maybe not, but my painter will remain shorter than the boat length!

W had 4m ropes provided when we bought our first boat new. They were absolutely useless except when using a pontoon. Not too sure what length the grey ropes that came with the VM are. I will check next time but I'm sure it is longer than 7m. We carry all the ropes from the old boat in the (cavernous) anchor locker, so thats 3x 4m, 3x8m and an assortment of other odds and ends. In a towing situation we are lucky to have the ski pole, and we have a 30m warp for towing use or for the kedge anchor. Main is 47m (asked for 60 and shop ran out....) + 8m 8mm chain I think.

Those lengths are the recommended lengths laid down by the RYA
