He's got to fund the next Redbay somehow. It all makes sense now, he trying to get the "old birds" upset about the RNLI being too assertive in their fundraising, then make his move on them and cream off the Legacy income for the new Willkship instead.

My experience of SNSM, particularly on the Normandy coast is that the boats are invariably moored afloat in "locked" harbours, so they are out of action +/- 3hrs LW, the RNLI would have built a bespoke boat house & slip outside of the harbour to ensure that they are available 24/7. The SNSM boats are generally much smaller & dare I say "Light" duty.

Hi Pikey Dave..

Only the Inshore boats are moored in tidal dependant areas, there will invariably be a 'CTT' (RNLI ALB equivalent) moored offshore covering the same sector. These are easy to spot, they have a green hull instead of the inshore's blue hull.

If you look at the link below and zoom in on Normandie you will see the extent of the SNSM network covering that area including the 6 CTT boats covering the area from ST Malo to Ouistrham

Heres quite a good link showing a nifty 360deg view of a French CTT wheelhouse.

http://www.360ouest.com/photo_fs.php?id=1349

And one of the engine room (including a typically grumpy looking french mechanic)

http://www.360ouest.com/photo_fs.php?id=1346

'Light duty' certainly not. Unsinkable and self righting but admitedly not as well built as a RNLI ALB. (i have been in a CTT as we have a familly member who is based at the Isle de Sein CTT station in Finistere)
The price of a CTT is only €850000 though and for all intents and purposes does the same job.

Incidentally, you over here this year?....if you are, i highly recommend Brest 2012 festival of the sea (13-19 July). We will be taking Gwenn there for a few days. Fantastic cruising ground.

Finally, well said Ribrunt

Price me an equivalent spec'd commercial 7.5/8.5m boat and I think you'll find there is not that much difference in the cost.

The inshore boats probably aren't too bad but do you really needs SIMS on an ALB to tell you the seacocks are open and joystick control complete with touch screen?
Like I said earlier the ILB's aren't too bad, its the ALBs that seem overspecced.

Not all pet lamb, still can't see why you need touch screens and joystick controls on an ALB. Even the mechanic on a Tamar said he lets SIM boot up (which takes two minutes) and then goes round and checks the seacocks himself.
Having switched to tell you a seacock is open is a bit OTT for me, plus its one more thing to maintain.

Main Idea is to keep the crew members sat in their seats for the maximum time they can once under way en route to and from a shout ,
with the sim system (as you will know or for those who dont ), any crewmember can swap or moniter different jobs ,even the engine and machinery space has cctv so it can be kept an eye on,
main thought about the system is in rough seas when the boat can maintain as much max speed dropping off waves and the like without crew members having to swap seats or positions hopefully much reducing injurys ,falls ,crew bumping into eachother ect .

I think you'll find you're welcomed with open arms at Hamble, like most indies, it's a very different setup to the RNLI.

No huge admin office, and pretty much every £1 donated gets spent on the boat, or crew kit.

They're currently trying to raise £500k for a new boathouse, planning permission for which took 10 years.

Sadly, no architects dept / planning consultants / key contractors turning up for these guys...

Not defending the RNLI, but I think you'll find the SNSM include in their figures the seasonal lifeguard stations, whereas the RNLI treat theirs (around 300 I think) seperately.

Certainly though, the difference between an average SNSM station - functional, spartan even - and a new RNLI station - cutting edge architecture, viewing galleries, public access, etc, is immense.

500k for a boatshed. A bit steep me thinks. Built a 50 ft shed myself so I'm not guessing when I say that

The chief executive of the RNLI is answering questions on twitter from 1800 till 1900 tonight so why don't the people who want questions answer ask the main man himself. Good luck

By way of a bit of balance.......

I pay by direct debit and have received no hassle at all !

During a short conversation with a member of RNLI staff at the LBS today I was asked politely if I'd like to upgrade my membership ? A simple no thanks was all it took .

My tuppence worth

If you donate by direct debit and have done so or say 5 years, perhaps a friendly call from an RNLI rep with well chosen words asking for a little extra is understandable considering inflation etc.
