Ribtec 585

So, just about to take the plunge on a Ribtec 585 (measures 5.96 approx). I has a pretty tidy looking / sounding Merc 125 on the back. Only a centre console with double jockey and very basic instrumentation. No A- frame / lights.
I took it out yesterday in some short steep seas and it handled well - albeit a little on the flighty side but only two up and very little fuel.
If I do buy it, I have located two double jockey seats which will be fitted behind the existing console / jockey. A new A-frame and lights will also be fitted.
Also includes a trailer which needs some attention to the brakes.
All in all it seems to be a good honest boat - a little basic but that can be sorted.
The package is 1996.
I am looking at spending about £1450 on extra bits: jockeys, A-frame, lights and a few little repairs.

The seller wants about £11 - £12k for it.

Any ideas whether this is the right sort of price (Bearing in mind I have to spend extra on bringing it up to my spec)?
Also I may want to sell it in a year or two to go bigger.

11k or 12k

I can't really advise on it's true value, however, if a seller says I'd like between 11K and 12k what he has just said is, I'll take 11k.
Now is a buyers market, sellers are selling because they need the money despite what they might say. If they didn't they wouldn't be selling would they ?

My advice to you would be.....1. Decide exactly what you are prepared to pay for the boat including what you need to spend on it.
2. Make a list of all it needs and a rough price against said list. Show this to the seller and advise him that if he reduces the price from 11k to the net figure you'll give him the cash (make sure you have the cash in your hand as you're telling him this). You WILL no doubt meet somewhere in the middle. It's a 2 way street and both parties need to be happy.

However, if need be, walk away, tell him you wish to think about it. Then, about 1 hour later, call him on the phone and ask if he'll reconsider the same offer - he should say yes - the fear of loss syndrome would have well kicked in during that 1 hour. If not offer an additional TOKEN amount - now he will say yes and you're on a winner.

Good Luck...

Thanks MeMe. I had almost decided to go in at £9750 and see what he says - we'll probably meet somewhere around the 10 - 10.5K I guess.
I suppose my main concern is, is a RIBTEC 585 with 125merc and trailer good value?

I don't think that's a very good deal at all! I wouldn't want to pay more tham 8-9k and i'd want the trailer sorted

Pete7 is selling a really up to speed Ribtec 635 that has been immaculately looked after for around 9.5 with a trailer which I think is younger than that one , but is a very good boat

cont....

Others will I hope give you advice on it's value, however, whatever the purchase the art of negotiation is the same. You have set yourself a budet of £9750 which, you should try and stick to. Therefore, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't be afraid to offer £9500. One can always go up but never down. I won't go on and on and so will leave you with this one crucial piece of advice. Make the seller your friend, be prepared to sit and chat about the price of fish, his farting dog, his cheating wife etc etc all day long. Once people become your friends they feel happier giving you something. In this instance, the price you want. Imagine how pissed you'd be if you offered £10,500 and he simply said yes. What might he have also said yes too ?

Good Luck.

Wavehumper,
Do you have any way of contacting Pete7.
Do you know what the spec on the 635 is?

I agree with Wave - it's a lot of cash for that size of boat at that age. I guess the engine is a carburetted 2-stroke?

Do the following sums:

1. Look at the asking prices for a similar engine on www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk
2. Look at the asking prices for a very recent good 4-stroke or fuel injected 2-stroke on the same site.

Subtract the first from the second, (have I lost anyone yet?) then add it to the purchase price of the rig you're looking at. Then add £500 for miscellaneous bits, and add the sum you budgeted for new console stuff.

Could you get a newer rig with a better engine and the console layout you want for the final figure?

Thanks guys - I was very close to making a bad decision then - good advice!
I have to speak to the broker today about the 585.
Will probably offer sub 9K - I dont think he'll like it but then again I can always wait for the 'RIGHT' boat to come along !

regarding pricing I am speaking from experince I have bought 4 boats now at the right price and one at the wrong price. It was an expensive lesson which I still regret.

That's right It used to be called 'go the distance' but that was an insult to Walter Trout and the Trade Descriptions Act

On the subject of Ribtec 585.

I have one to sell ... about 10 years old I think. Engine is Yam 115 v4. Trailer is knackered, good for local launching only. Has a reasonably new Lowrance 15MT GPS/Sounder. Boat is in great order, engine has performed well over the years. The combination is great and performs very well at sea, the Ribtec 585 hull has a great reputation.

And so ... how much would you guys expect me to see it at. I was going to ask £5750.

I am in no rush to sell, cause I already have a new boat and running costs of two is negliable.

Any advice welcome.

Nick, I think you rang me yesterday about the 5.85 I had for sale.

I have sold 2 this year, the one you saw advertised and a 2000 model with loads of extras and a 135hp Merc Optimax, brand new trailer etc, it sold for 15k and it was totally like new.

I aggree with waveh, its very expensive for that year etc, I would pay about 7 to 8k for it.

With reference to the boat tho they are great, not many for sale as people hang onto them.

I would hang on and see what comes up.

Nick,
I would suggest that it is a lot of money for that set up. However, that boat is a good rib. I almost went for one in Bembridge early this year but was put onto a 6.5 Ribtec for 13,5 K. I think it was theWavehunper who put me onto it, (PS Thanks) That was a 2000 model with a Yam 115 on the back. I can tell you that i have had my boat out in some pretty horrible stuff and it was fantastic. So on the issue of Ribtec, i can vote for them.

I do know that there is a 585 with trailer (1999 i think) Blue/Yellow Ribtec with double jockeys available with Stuart at Lymington Marine Sales. Bought my first rib of Stuart and is a good mate. Wouldn't hurt to have a look as its only down the road from you.

If you want any more details give him a bell, 01590 610808 Fax:- 01590 610809 Mob:- 07710 969433

Hope this helps, need any more help drop me a PM

Regards
Stuart

I am not on commision (Doh) so give him a call and see what you think.

Regards
Stuart
PS If you want a trial of a 6.5 give me a bell.
