A brilliant boat that fetches a premium. I spent many hours hounding along beside Roy's and a few driving it and I reckon that a 5.8 Vipermax handles a bit of sea slightly better. Only my opinion, but i've also witnessed DHDai's Vmax in action at close quarters and consider it a little less front end light.
Having said that, both are superb boats.

True. Have you considered a Ribeye? Not so many of those.

I had a 585 for a couple of years. IMO it's a very competent and capable hull. Swapped the Mercury 2 stroke for a F115 Yamaha, changed steering from cable to hydraulic and then took it on some longish legs i.e Plymouth - Scillies, Southampton - Salcombe, and across to Cherbourg and St Vaast etc.

Only major fault that I found was water ingress between the hulls, which was not an issue on single day trips but did affect the handling if the boat had been left afloat for periods. If you were seatrialling one, this is an area that I would look at carefully, however manufacturer claimed to have rectified this problem with later models, I believe.

Caveat emptor obviously, but you could do a lot worse...

ah, thanks Btb, boat won't be kept afloat so hopefully water ingress won't be a problem, it is one of the older models.
How did it perform with the 115?

Your lack of knowledge in this field is staggering.

Just a couple of clicks on the mouse would have revealed to you that Ribeye and Ribtec are the same company

Coming from the idiot that suggested that when your Rib capsizes you must swim away from it incase it sinks and leaves behind an oil slick that is very, very rich.

Drop it Timw, it's boring.
Take a look http://www.ribeye.co.uk/products/ribtec.asp. Although owned by the same company, Ribtec and Ribeye boats are TOTALLY seperate products. Also, Ribeye took over Ribtec in 2001, knowing my mate Kernow, it's very possible that the boat he is interested in may be pre '01.

Now go away.

Perhaps you should drop making your extremely boring comments about Ribeye wherever you can.

Ah, so here lies your problem. Had a little 'humour' failure did we?

You don't own the thing anymore, so you pick your toys and I'll not respond to anything you have to say on this site again.

No sense of humour failure my side chummy.

Actually I have a new Ribeye now which although a little smaller, acts as rather a smart tender for my somewhat larger "toy".

back on track... cant comment on the 585 but the the ribtec 655 is a cracking boat. the older hulls are supposed to be better than the ones made since ribeye took over, thats hearsay no personal comment.

i would say the osprey viper is a better sea boat, but slower. i beleive (have not checked figures) it to be a deeper V (the osprey viper). i would say i could out run the ribtec 655 in my old 6m viper in a moderate to rough sea.

i have water ingress problems on the ribtec, its common on ribs. at some point, all the ribs i have owned have had such a problem, if you dont leave afloat, dont worry.

<edit> ribtec have good consoles and good seats. i fitted ribtec jockeys to the osprey, i was so impressed.

Johnwin has a Ribtec 585, I am sure if you dropped him a PM he could share his thoughts and experiences.

It was a brilliant motor. Never missed a beat and hence my confidence to take it further afield with my kids aboard. It would manage 40 kts + and IIRC we managed 46 kts one day. Used to chinewalk like hell at that speed though !
