Ribs that slam.

Deep V, Medium V and Shallow V Hulls...

As I have only been ribbing for 3 years I am not what you would call an experienced ribber but on every rib that I have been on I have at some time felt the slam of the rib. On the larger 6 metre + ribs like RC, RQ you definitely experience a smoother ride as compared to the smaller sized ribs, which is obviously due to the extra length and weight.

On the smaller ribs that I have been on they all seem to slam and appear to be a rougher ride in the chop, regardless of how deep the V is. Is this because of the shorter length, for example hadd's RC 5.45 has a huge V hull a lot deeper than the 585, and my AC 5.4 has what is described as a medium V hull. In my opinion in the chop , there isn't much difference in the ride so I guess that what I am asking is does a deep V really only come into play with the larger heavier ribs?

Bigger boats weigh more...which helps hugely. However if you bring a big heavy super super deep v boat down 'off vertical' the flat of the hull will give you a pretty unpleasant arrival back into the water....

Everything slams, it's just the degree that's different. The deep V means it cuts through the waves better though.

Hi Steve I agree with the two guys but also the other benefit of extra length depending on the length of the waves does enable you to go across the top of waves and saves you dropping down into the trough. very handy in a short to medium chop

Yep Billy thats what I was trying to say about the longer boats for example two 6 metre plus boats out together one a medium v and one a deep v then I guess that you would really notice the difference, but for 5 metre boats would you really notice the difference due to them dropping down nearly every wave.

In my 15 years of ownership I find that 5M hulls 'if' slender and bow light slam like hell in chops, or sea taken at 45 ° , it really is a pain the ass .. and you have to tack if you want speed.. more length and you get a better ride .. but these are heavier boats and dont suffer as much. Go up to 8.5 and its a whole new ball game again .. the hull length will stradle most chops and the ride is a whole lot smoother in most conditions

I have noticed though that the current 5.4 hull I have is an old Tornado design which has very aggresive spray rails, and Ive been amazed how well this boat handles, in chop , as any water sliding up the hull gets pushed down hard .. and these come right to the bow .. which many other hulls Ive looked at dont .. they are smooth up front.

Another I found succesful was a Valiant .. it did have a smooth bow, but I had a hell of a lot of weight up front, some was by way of under deck fuel tank the rest was a massive bow locker that I loaded with anchors warp chains etc and it made it handle like a peach

Edit ,, I replied to this after post #2

We noticed it coming down the sound of mull in a head on sea if we went slow we went up and down the waves but when we got a decent pace we could skim across the tops making a smoother ride

My old Ribtec 585 was the softest ride of any boat if been in.

my hull will slam even though it has decent v shape. i do find however that if you have the balls to open the throttle a little more you will skim over the waves and create a much smoother ride - obviously whilst keeping a good eye out for any particularly big waves!
mine may be medium v but is much better than the shallow v ribs ive driven.

As much as the landing Steve, the whole wave to wave process is amplified as when you hit the creat you fly higher than Hadd as his hull will not be pushed up as much, as he slices more in to the wave.

Agreed, weight is another issue for sure.

The only true way would be compare two boats from one brand such as a 5.5m Humber. A destroyer vs the Assault. I've not been in both, but have seen them in the sea. It's plainly obvious which you'd cross the overalls in!!!

There is a lot to be said about powering into the weather if your rib and you can handle it, it does make for a smoother ride. It does take a bit of getting used to though as it is kinda against the smart thinking

i convinced a friend of mine to put 3 bags of sand in the bow of his avon. he was convinced it would slow him down, but because it controlled the slamming he could go faster. the layout of his boat left the bow very light.

Then mine mustn't be as medium as I think then, because going round Anglesey with the other nobbers which was quite choppy to say the least I could keep up with a few of the bigger boats and also at a decent speed. I did ache a lot though when we got back to Ty Calch, but I guess that I was not the only one that day.

I guess that I will have to ask Matt H, but he is mad anyways

But only for certain hulls ive found of similar size, some will not do this at all, and you also need the horsepower too

I think that's the point Steve, whilst one might keep up with another bigger boat, you can't tell from your own boat if a) you are in more discomfort or b) your boat is flying around more.

Re powering on, as long as you're well balanced it can often better to power up than slowly ride up and down and up and down, but if wave pattern lengthens suddenly past what you can broach from crest to crest..... STUFF! ;o)

That's the skill in helmsman ship and knowing your boat!

Thats not true... I don't think that my ride was any more uncomfortable than any of the other boats my size and I had no trouble keeping up with any of you and you was mostly well behind me .
