Ribcraft 585 + Suzuki 140 fuel consumption

Hello,

Does anyone had ANY indication at all for the fuel consumption of the Ribcraft 585 + Suzuki 140hp? It will be max 7 men up but no gear on board and not much more than idiling.

Now the above set up may sound strange but Im doing support boat for the Celtic Challenge next weekend and after a snag with my RIB ive had to borrow the Father-in-laws rib. The trip port to port is about 90 miles (round it up to 100) for the rowing boat but i will be going back and forward most the time so could well cover double that but averaging maybe 5 knts so im not sure what to aim for.

MATH Time....
The only figure ive found so far is a 585 with 90hp that will get 80 miles from 20 gallons so that works out at 1.125l per mile. So 1.125l x 100 - 112.5 litres. Plus 1 3rd for safety means 149.6 litres. So 150litres to cover a slow, repetitive 100 miles? Sound correct.

Sounds alot of fuel to me but if you think il cover maybe 200 miles (doubling up) at 5knts 150litres doesnt sound like much. We have a support yacht 40ft away at all times to carry the fuel for us and most of the time we will be only 2 up and running out of fuel simply IS NOT an option so what would you go with based on the above ?

I had a RC 585 with a 175 FICHT & used to use 20l/hr at 27kn which is well under 1l/nm. Ticking over it used b**ger all.

I've recently sold my 585 which had a Suzuki df 140. For planning I used a figure of 0.95 litres a nautical mile although the true consumption was around 0.90 per mile. Cruising speed was around 25-30 kn.

The distance was measured using gps tracking and fuel use was by brimming the tank at petrol pumps.

Hi Will

I'd reckon on about a litre per mile.

My 150 opti manages a bit better than this at 25 knots or so.

Looking at the smartcraft gauges at displacement speeds it also seems to work out at about a litre per mile.

I would expect a 4 stroke to be pretty frugal when at 5 knots or less. So you might use less than your calcs suggest.



Worst speed is between 8 and about 20 knots where consumption is more than a litre per mile.

So im on the right side of things then which is good - potentially way on the right side depending on the most economical speed balanceing act so going of 0.95 + 1/3 safety il need 126 litres

1:1 seems a simple way

Going to speak to the RIB crew the team used last time and see how much they took with them.

For anyone who knows about the challenge im with the Aberdovey mens team - they were 4 seconds of the world record last time

If you can resist the temptation to be tazzing between the yacht and the rowing boat all the time you should be fine.

Having said that - if you do have the facility to carry 200 litres you might be grateful of it.

What about towing the rib behind the yacht?

That's about the same as I remember Biggles' RC585/DF140 using when we did a Round The Island on it.

Same for mine - about 0.9L/mile at 25 kts with 5 people and 4 sets of diving gear.

HI Guys - Thanks for all the responses.

Went to sea with a full RIB tank + 4 x 20l Jerry cans and had plenty so all went well and infact my team (aberdyfi mens) won. By 10 miles or so in a 90 mile race ahah!!!
