im in need of some advice, im torn between getting a new ribcraft 5.3 or 5.85. they both seem to have gr8 advantages but i can't come to a decision, please help!!

Whats your budget. I suppose that is the over riding factor.

I have the 585. Only disadvantage I can see over getting the 535 is that if you trailor/sail you need two people for launching and retrieving. But it is bigger so i can get four people comfortably on board.

Budget and storage space were my overriding factors.

All things being equal, I'd take the bigger boat. You can run a bigger boat with fewer passengers and gear; you can't run a smaller boat with more than it will handle.

I faced exactly the same dilemma - I was torn between the 5.3 and the 5.85 but in the end I chose the 5.3 because it would do everything I wanted it to do, be more easily towed/handled, and save me about 3 to 4 grand. I haven't regretted my choice at all. It would be nice to have the extra speed (from a bigger engine) and more deck space but you have to draw the line somewhere.

Beware, Ribcraft's pricing is cunningly designed to hook you and then get you to spend a fortune on the options...

I wonder how many 585's Ribcraft have made..... There seems to be a thread a week from members considering the Ribcraft.

Go for the 585 every time - they're fantastic. Think of the Ribcraft 4.8 we used for the PB2 course on steroids, if the 4.8 is the best sub 5m around, a 585 has got to be one of the best sub 6m's.

If you fancy buying a second hand one, I have just put my 5.85 on the market.

Very solid boat, with a great engine, and lightly used

May save on the ribcraft pricing!

go for the 5.85 all day long, better sea keeping qualities, more space, more engine options should you wish to update the power unit later, but not so big as to cause towing and retriving problems. Budget wise, it is more, but I think it will be money well spent

5.85 is the one to get

A lot of my boating is flat out next to a RC 585. I rate them very highly but, If I were buying a sub 6m boat I'd probably go for a 585 Vipermax with a 150hp lump. 45knt performance with amazing seakeeping and a perfectly proportioned boat.,

What exactly does the second person do? Hold a towel or pour the brandys?

There is a Rib craft on ebay, but £9250 sounds expensive for a 4 year old 4.8m !!!!

I did say one of the best!!! Unfortunately Greyhound isn't racing much at the moment, and it's depressing me to see her sitting in the yard, so will someone please offer me some money to take her off my hands and get her up and running and showing Ribcrafts a clean transom again...

Nah, I don't like the look of that engine much. What you really want is one of these: http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F121546/ with one of benc's Yammie 115s on the back...
