Yes you do.

Like your car's tax disc, you need an annual VHF license (Your personal license - properly called operator's certificate- is like your VHF driving license, the boat's VHF license - properly called ships radio license - is like your car tax disc)

Hi Martin,

I assume Manos means the boats license from the Radiocommunications Agency which is displayed in a clear sticker thing on your boat.

I downloaded mine from http://www.radio.gov.uk/topics/marit...time-index.htm
and I think it's another 20 fee if I remember right. Takes about 7 to 10 days to come through when you've sent the details in to them..... that's if you remember to sign it of course (d'oh) - the first app I sent them I forgot to sign at the end, so it got sent back again.... oops

I have just read the leaflet which came with my SSR certificate. There is nothing about displaying the number on both sides of the boat.

From MCA leaflet;

Yes - nobody in the cold bit of Europe will bother about where/how your SSR is displayed. Bloody pedantic Greeks, LOL

The French of course have a reputation for being officious, but I've never experienced it either as a land based tourist or by sea. I was once advised I could "drink as much as you like and drive home" when on holiday in France "as they'll never bother to stop a car with GB plates" - I didn't test this, of course!

I will be quite anoyed if i do need to move my SSR sticker since it's only been there about 10 hours (made it this morning and stuck it on lunchtime!!!!!). Havent found the leaflet yet but i'm going to gamble on this one and go with DJL's advice!

So you'll be putting up the bail money Daniel!

Best I get a blooming advertising board stuck on the aframe .

Perhaps I'll go back to playing with the rubber duck at bath time

Ok, thanks I get the idea now and have downloaded the appropriate ships radio form and will send it off tommorrow.

Whats the protocol/ accepted practice on flying a red ensign and a courtesy flag ??

- oh no, this is one of those Qs that can make a thread go on forever! YBW.com has loads on flag protocol stuff, esp on the yottie forum...

I think you just have the red ensign as the major (highest and largest) and the courtesy flag as the minor (lower and smaller). As RIBs have fairly simple flag arrangements (if any!) most of the yottie stuff about where to fly what is sort of irrelevant. However you can elaborate as much as you like. Skipper's nationality, etc (note Charles's SA flag on his "mucking about" thread).

Of course, the most important thing is the RIBnet burgee
