Rib video's: backing tracks

Any decent rib video has a good backing track, but i am stuck for ideas.

Can you help me by posting you favourite tracks and i will try and compile a definitive top 10.
(this should cause a few arguments!!)

Each bit of music I try and get to match the environment at the time. Although not on the rib last week, this music seems to match perfectly the job at hand - http://videos.ribseadrive.co.uk/tena...0-06_large.wmv

When editing the rib videos, I try and get quiet bits in the track to coincide with lulls on the boat, when we're not at speed for instance. Also, little things like video transitions at changes in the music - see the begining of this video - http://videos.ribseadrive.co.uk/crui...8-06_large.wmv and http://videos.ribseadrive.co.uk/crui...6-06_large.wmv for examples.

A couple of tracks I might use on the next video depending on weather conditions would be Faster Kill Pussycat Featuring Britanny Murphy, Namara (Jurgen Vries Remix), possibly World Hold On by Bob Sinclar, and Nelly Furtado Maneater (cos I like the bass). Of course, it may be the case that none of them fit

One thing I am going to do though is put the bullet cam on the tug more often when we're doing small tow jobs.

There's so much material available digitally, so much backing music on the telly you can't be stuck for ideas! OK, what do you listen to in the car? What bit of incidental music did you like recently? Here's an idea: Andreas Johnson - Glorious (was used on the BT Global Challenge TV series a few years ago) you will find it easily on iTunes or LimeWire or whatever your favoite site is. Have a look through the track listings on some compilation CDs, watch some sport on telly and you should get some ideas.

Sandstorm is one of my all time favourites - was going to mention it. Also Rapture by Iio.

I also love Mano's soundtrack in his video - the techno F1 track.

On a totally different note....... For cruising around rough seas on the West Coast of Scotland it would have to be Mendelssohn!!!

i usually use what im listening to at the time. the boats got an mp3 player with loads of tunes. Last 2 have been Mason-Exceeder and Fedde le grand- put your hands up for detroit extended version

Alex - What editing software are you using? Your definately right about trying to coincide the quiet bits of music with the lull moments in the video but its often hard to do!

Your videos are really good, when you've got the camcorder recording how do you stop the slamming of the boat effect the tape. I quickly put this together from the video off Bens bullet cam on the Yarmouth Cruise. Didn't take much time over the music choice! It was nearly the Birdy song but it wasn't long enough!

I used to use Windows Movie Maker, but ran out of options on that pretty quickly since it is basic. Now, I use Pinnacle Studio 10, which is far far better than Studio 9. I've bought a couple of extra packs for it, including the 5.1 surround addon, which is great for DVD's and the like.

What I tend to do is rip the 4 or 5 tapes in one afternoon and then spend a few hrs getting the best bits from them. This was a little slow to start off with, but I'm running 4hdd's in a raid5 array now, plus another 4 drives, 2 in raid0 and 2 in raid1 which has significantly reduced the encoding time, and also improved the general performance while editing.

The actual video clips are stored on the r5 array, with temporary files being on the r0 array - the final iso file, plus wmv's etc... end up on the r1 array.
Despite having 1.8Tb available, I am at 80% capacity now due to this home video malarky since I bought the bullet cam earlier this year

Next year, I'll replace the 300gig drives with 500's or more if they're available then... - I've had to call MS twice already this year cos my product activation thing kept getting mucked up!! Computers are a bottomless pit, same as the boat, I upgraded the hdd's earlier this year to 4, then to 8 at which point the PSU went up in a bit of smoke. Replaced that, and the pc wouldn't come on - turned out the old psu had taken mboard with it

Anyhow, tapes - was talking with Ben about this the other evening. Although I don't put the DV cam in any particular packaging, it lives in my dry bag right by the transom, and it's usually packed amongst a couple of spare fleece jackets, jumpers, waterproofs etc... which I guess all help. I had planned to run the cable to the front console, but after hearing about the DV tape jumping, that's now been scrubbed, and I'll continue as is.

Yarmouth vid was good - that a-frame moves a lot less than mine

Alex what have you changed re sound codecs - I couldn't play some of your larger files before but now they are working fine - nothing has changed my end.

By the way have you seen the new flash memory cameras coming out - all solid state - bye bye tapes - at last!!!

I had to reinstall after motherboard death, so although I have installed exactly the same software and codecs, maybe pinnacle is using something that your pc is happy with now I guess

How much length can you get on the flash memory stuff? - is it as good quality as DV?

Think I used "Clocks" on my first ever rib video about 3 and a half years ago - will dig it out later and upload it

Better than DV quality and they are doing cards up to 16gb in size!!!! Bloody expensive but a 2gb one wouldn't be too bad. Still a bit new at the moment but it's the way they will go.

are the ribs travelling fast, is it scienic. this will help us descide the best track for you, and how long is the video.

Alex - thats a lot of video footage to take up that amount of space!! What quality do u take it off the tape, the best it will let you or do you take if off at a lesser quality in readiness for web posting?

Anybody use Bero to create DVDs from video clips and photos? I'm having real issues getting it to write the compiled dvd to a DVD disk. It will compile the file and save to hard drive but not to DVD. I can create a data DVD and put normal files on the disk so i know its not the drive. Any ideas?
