Rib Seat Cover Replacement

I have been given the task of repairing/replacing the seat cover and back for our sailing club rib. I think it is a Tornado from around 2004. Am I right in saying that these are now called XS ribs and made by Barnet Marine? I know it was bought new from there (so I am told).

It has the sausage type seats that you straddle. It has 2 seats with backrests. One of the seats and one of the backrests is all ripped and so when it gets wet you get wet when sitting on it so we need to replace the cover. I have been to a local domestic upholsterer to me who is willing to recover it with similar vynil type material but not the same. Quoted £98 for the seat and back rest. Before I give him the OK I noticed the fabric on the old seat on the reverse side says it is fire retardent. I assume the stuff this guy is going to use isn't.

Bearing in mind it is for a sailing club safety boat do I really need to make sure it is fire retardent? Do I really need to find a boat upholstery specialist that will have the "proper" material? If so does anybody know of anyone doing this in Lancashire?

The other option is to ask Barnet Marine if they do it or is it cheaper to just buy new units ready made. Does anybody know if seats are stock items. Before ringing them thought I would ask here so I have some knowledge first.

Hi matt , I've just got my seats done they charged £90 for 3 seats 2 back rests so that price you got would be about right

Like the look of those. Ours is just the same. Where did you get them done? I notice you are only in Manchester not far from me so was it local to there? Do you know if the material was fire proof or at least "boat grade".

He does a lot of boat seats he seams to know what he,s doing, I don't know if mine are fire proof ,most of the stuff they use these day is fire proof,he,s done a cracking job of them he also did my mates fletcher speed boat all the seats & done a great job his base is at Atherton 5mins from juc 5 off m61 , i can do blackpool in 45mins from my home if you want is number PM me

They look good hope mine turn out as well are the screws in the base into wood or something else.

The base is made from PVC it won't rot like wood does, there,s a PVC Block what the screws go into

I was wondering if the bases where made from anything other than wood, so thanks for answering a question I was thinking of posting.

For those that have replaced any wood/plywood bases, did you varnish or paint with PVA or anything before having it recovered?

Jet made a new base for my console and backrest today and was wondering if I should paint it with something to keep the moisture out the ply.

You can get an oil base stain for wood, a few coats of that should do the job
