So, oh wise one, mighty metalurgical guru, master of all things sharp and dangerous, could you share your wealth of knowledge and experience for the greater good?

I'm sure we'd all appreciate it, and be better armed in future.

A tip for de-rusting and preventing re-rusting.
Find a wine cork (shouldn't be difficult) and dip the end in some Vim scouring powder.
Rub all over the blade until the rust has gone. You can go for a high polish if you want but there is no need.
Something in the Vim will stop rust reforming for quite some time.
Repeat as required.
It use this on carbon steel kitchen knives and it works a treat.

There's always a need for a good bit of polishing.

Another thing to consider with any stainless steel is that it will pick up any steel if rubbed against - that will cause discolouration - rusting

Andy,

Sorry for not responding to this earlier. I think something along these lines would be an excellent choice for dealing with a variety of situations that may arise while boating. I would suggest it be carried on your belt, and in addition to (rather than in place of) a fixed bladed, blunt tipped emergency/rescue knife.

I've got one or two cheap leatherman knockoffs which have proven themselves to be quite handy at times, but are limited by their lack of quality. It can be very handy to have something on your person to deal with simple issues which may arise rather than fumbling around in the boat's toolbox.

I'm looking to purchase a high quality multitool, either one of the Leatherman models (either the Charge, Wave or Surge) or one of the Victorinox Swisstool models (either the Spirit or X) . I'll need to take a closer look at all of these at one of the local shops

Do you have the wave? If so how do you like it?

I have a leatherman, the price of it tho.
I am telling ya... go with the Titanium and have serrated edge.

As we are talking about knives does anyone know where I can get a good set of Japan Knives for cooking. They are made the same way as a Katana sword with the folding steel. Its for the kitchen. I have one thousand knives each as blunt as the last, I was going to turn them all into the Police as part of the amnesty over here to get rid of them...

Knife Amnesty ??? What the hell is a knife amnesty ???

As for the japanese blades, yeah they produce some amazingly great products. My Sister and brother in law hosted a Japenese student who's father was apparently a well known knife maker in Japan (I don't recall the brand). He gave my sister & BOL a couple of kitchen knives, and they hold an amazing edge.

Brittle, though. You don't want to be prying up a screw head with one (they're pretty pricey, too.)

Check out the Gerber tools as well. I've got the small Model 400; been using it daily for about 5 years on whatever needs to be convinced to work. I like it well enough to buy a backup in case something happens to it.

It's when our government tells us we're all violent criminals if we own anything other than a kitchen knife and we can hand them in without getting a life sentence.

I'm not exaggerating much either.

Tell me about it - I can just imagine all the criminals rushing to the Police station to hand them in....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5178720.stm

The Association of Chief Police Officers' Tony Melville thanked everyone who made use of the amnesty.
"Every knife that is taken off our streets is one that cannot be used to kill, maim or intimidate," he said

Of course there is nothing to stop you buying one at your local Tesco - it's a wonder Gordan Ramsey hasn't launched a new campaign for the "knifeless kitchen"!!!

Codders,

I read the Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation (we have a Commie Broadcasting Corp. as well) article which told me about what a wonderful success the National Knife Amnesty (NKA) was. From the article, I was certain that Great Britain is only one, maybe two more NKAs away from becoming a crime free utopia. Yet you and Nos4r2 seem a little dubious about that, therefore I must recommend to the state that you both be given some 're-education'.

Seriously, how could people possibly think something so stupid and wasteful will make the slightest dint in violent crime? Whatever happened locking up the perps and throwing away the key?

Now to bring this thread back on topic (so JK doesn't turn it into splinter cell banished to the 'other stuff section' ), I looked at a few multitools today and was very impressed by the Leatherman Charge. It seemed extremely sturdy yet nice and compact. Will look at some others next week.

I love my Letherman - thats the knife! not the handlebar moustached one from V. Peeps But I keep it safe in my dry bag clipped to a stainless grab rail. The thing that would bother me would be deep sixing it due to replacement cost. So el cheapo serated jobbies till I win Euro lotto.

but that one was really... shiny!

I agree though, the Lman models are built much more sturdily than the Swisstools.
