It works well and it doesn't spoil your night eyes. Almost none of the light from the lamp comes back to you, it bounces off the water and travels away. However, you can see seabirds (They can see you and they fly off, which saves you mowing them down.), white horses and buoys when they're close. Up here there are almost no other boats but I'm not sure about you Solent folk dazzling each other.
