Unfortunately the chap was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. As far as I know they still haven't found the woman. There were two life jackets on board the RIB but it would seem that neither of them were wearing them.

Was following this on the VHF yesterday, very sad.

Search for the woman was called off this morning after an extensive search didn't find her.

Vers sad news. I am suprised a RIB could stop that suddenly - I would have thought it would have ridden up and over submerged rocks before coming to a halt. Obviously a rock sticking well out of the water would be a different story.

It proves charts don't give a true impression of what a place is really like.

I wonder if this is the area concerned? The chart really doesn't give a picture of the rocks under the surface.

Thats the area. Until the exact crash location is pinpointed though its hard to tell where to look. But I can confirm that I have seen the ledge at low tide and its large and very dangerous looking.

I've moved the general discussion about hazards to a new thread: http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20491

Shocking news & I read on the BBC website they hit a lobster buoy line. Do these connect the pots together?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/h...re/6907076.stm

We had such a good day ribbing around today, snorkelling in caves & sunbathing it is so tragic to come home & hear this sort of news. We saw a few lobster pots & they are not that easy to see, didn´t realise they were such a hazard.

I´ve learnt so much from this forum - there are hidden rocks around the coast here in Spain & we see lots of boats plough through the area without any problem. We give them a wide berth to be sure.

Saying that we are v risk averse, no one else wears lifejackets here & we do get strange looks as we all wear them.

Cheers all.

Last time I looked my charts seemed to do quite a good job of showing rocks under the water, that's what I tend to use them for.

Collecting a potline at 18kts wouldn't (shouldn't?) have thrown the occupants out. It might be that the RIB has ended up in the potline after the ejection occured - otherwise it would have ended up on the beach!!

Your right we'll have to see what the report comes up with.

Don't want to make light of it but green bits 1 or 2m above chart datum are usually a give away.

I think it goes to show that the sea is indeed a very dangerous place.

How many of us speed around and think afterwards that they were lucky to get away with doing something that they wouldn't have normally done.

Its only by luck that more accidents don't happen. IMHO.

From reading the 2 very different reports I wonder if they got a line around the prop - one of them tried to free it and got into difficulties and the other tried to help.

Way to early to tell though - if ever!!!

Another thing to think about is the Lifeboat station.

A Lifeboat station is only present because its dangerous nearby. They ain't for show. There are a lot in the Solent because there are a lot of dangerous areas.

Re the accident in the Solent. The press reports seem to imply that the eyewitness who saw the rib ground said it looked as if no one was on board. They don’t say where the body was found either. It may therefore be another case of the occupants being thrown out somewhere else, no kill cord maybe, and the rib just keeps on going (eventually stopping on a lobby pot or wherever) and leaving the two poor individuals in the water which is still pretty cold despite the time of year. Whether this was the case or not the number of avoidable deaths related to the use of kill cords is amazing.

lets not start a bun fight about maps - when a couple of inexperienced ribbers have lost their lives - by the looks of things the female was at the helm or very close to it at the time of impact, i wont go into the gory details but it certainly seems that way....very sad indeed...

lets hope that this is a very rare event ;-(
