Removing badly flaked paint from A frame

Over the years my poor A frame has taken a battering from elements and wayward blows from varying objects and is now flaking badly as can be seen from any of my pics on file. One of my winter projects was to bring it back to bare stainless.
Any ideas as to the best method of achieving this.
Cheers
J

unfortunately you cant buy good old nitromors any more and the eco friendly stuff is a waste of time .you could take it to a powder coaters and have it dipped or use a blowlamp and burn it off

If you get it powder coated Billy it will last....And they will Shot blast it first which also makes a good key.
It's basically a choice of the hassell of stripping the A-frame of wiring ect and removing...or stripping the old paint off and just painting it again.
If you were closer I could get it sorted worth the money
All the best with it either way Mate.

Are you willing to take the frame off and remove all the fittings? Dipping or shot blasting should be possible but not DIY. Otherwise it's lots of elbow grease but you can leave the frame and fixtures in place.

Da man said 'shot blast'.
Grit blasting will descale and give a key. I'd then have it powder coated.

I'd remove the frame and ship it off to the powder coaters, they'll do the lot.

Poly and Maximus I really can't be bothered going to all the hassle of removing all the electrics etc. As most of the frame is already badly flaked and showing probably 35% SS it's fairly spotty to say the leaded I was just going to attack it and try to just leave it ss

Just looked, apparently it's banned on your side of the pond, except for use in an industrial setting.

Looks like you can still buy it from chemical supply houses: Methylene Chloride for Sale from ReAgent, UK Suppliers

Billy if you want the job done properly I think that you have no choice but to strip the wiring and take it off and get it shot blasted and powder coated as Maxi say's ..... plus rewiring it yourself is easier than you think. Good luck

If You decide for mechanical removal, Abranet is good stuff. Various grits can be purchased also by length, and even by manual sanding it works pretty well. But if You wont paint it, there will be plenty of polishing in any case.

Two pack paint stripper from a automotive paint supplier or motor factor (who supplies the motor trade not diy) should be the most aggressive you will get but may be only available in 5 ltrs

If you just want to remove remaining paint Billy ...(and re-paint) I suspect it would VERY soon (especially as you say it's faking already!) rub off with some 180 or 220 grade wet and dry paper.
Use it wet, with a little Fairy liquid and it'll cut better, and keep the dust down
That will also help will key it up....for some etch (aerosole) Primer, which you can get at an automotive supplies along with some two/pack car paint....which you can also get mixed up at the same place in you're choice of colour?..Matt or Gloss ect...Mask out and use dust sheets and apply with thin coats, till the right finish is achieved
Best option IMO if you're not going P.C.

any mobile soda blasters over there? like shot blasting only with baking soda so less toxic. I had pretty good success with the CitriStrip on my zodiac hull paint (surprisingly). If it's stainless do you really want to paint it?

Removing badly flaked paint from A frame

But you didn't answer the actual question though.

Jambo didn't ask "What would you do", he asked how to get the paint off so he could go back to stainless...
