Reliable Forecast

Can anyone recommend a reliable site that forecasts sea conditions here in the UK? (South Devon in particular.)

I see there are a few around, but wondered if anyone could recommend any site in particular?

Being a newbie, a newbie-friendly site that might even have some pretty pictures and symbols would be helpful. The shipping forecasts I've heard on the radio leave me all at sea!!!

The inshore waters forecast on the Met Office website is OK. Pick 'Marine' from the left hand menu then 'Inshore Waters' on the right side of the screen.

As already mentioned both XC and Metcheck offer very good and fairly easy to grasp forecasts. If I am going to be moving around then I use XC to get an overview of what weather is where, but Metcheck is ideal if you are going to be in one area for a few days and maybe need to see when the best chance of a "window" is.

The list of symbols that Metcheck use is, I think, about as easy a way as any to get a good idea of things like wind, cloud and temp.

Yes go take a look over the cliffs is about the only relaible way when it looks a bit iffy .
The surf foecast sites ofen give a good idea of what its like some have a webcam or a photo taken that day . If the surf is not too big and is clean its a good indication that the water is not going to be too rough .

Trouble is, there's not much consistency between the forecasts. e.g. want to got out in Southampton tomorrow around lunchtime, say 1pm.

The Met office site at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...t_weather.html

tells me winds 14mph, gusting to 26mph - a bit windy for my fairweather, small RIB liking.

Metcheck tells me winds 7mph gusting to 9mph - sounds good.

XCweather tells me winds of 12mph - OK, but could go either way?.

So I guess you look out the window in the morning and make your own mind up.

I've recently been converted to this windsurfing site http://www.windguru.com/int/index.php?sc=47904 (the link shows Ventnor) - which is currently showing a number of different wind speeds and wave heights (depending upon the forecast model chosen) at 13:00 tomorrow :-

Wind Gust Wave Height
---- ---- ------------
13mph 0.9m
18mph 20mph
17mph 18mph
16mph

It's the wave height, period and direction that I have found to be the most useful (and accurate every time up to about 2 days ahead) rather than the wind speed when planning an outing.
