RB4 - Gemini

I think the Gemini I bought a few months ago
is the Gemini from the RB4 shindig from several years ago.
the short clip on Youtube - small boats big seas, would seem to point that way
as the colour scheme on the hull and tubes is pretty distinctive.
Also the fact that it has an under deck tank that runs the full length of the boat may also be a give away. I know there are threads in the Rib Net archive, but I wonder if anyone associated with the boat at that time who is still an active member of the forum has a record of the serial number so I can confirm this?
thanks

If it is the same boat then that's definitely not the motor that was on it for RB4. I have the dvd, can have a look to see if I can pick out the driver and navigaotors names if you get no joy from RIBmag.

Yep - even on the you tube trailer you can tell its a Mariner fitted, and the
RibNet archive that carries reports on the RB4 actually says it was fitted with a Mariner 60. The boat was owned at some time by a Ski / adventure sports company and I suspect they fitted the Gulf 150VRO.
The RibNet archive does say it was underpowered with the Mariner 60.
Wonder if anyone still has the DVD for sale?

Not sure the 150 Very Rarely Oiled is much better...

This is the RB4 boat, it's a Gemini waverider 550 that was specially shortened to meet the entry requirements, as previously said it is not the original engine.

I originally rigged the boat and after the event it was sold on by a friend of mine. He is currently on holiday but if you give me a nudge in a week or so I will see if he has any records left of the serial number.

thanks Keiron

HMS said he remembered the boat - a good boat but very wet !
Can you remember what you fitted in the console originally?
There is a cut out for a VHF - its ICOM 505 size, and apart from engine gauges, there is also a what looks like a larger rectangular cut out thats been blanked over - did you fit a plotter?
Do you remember what the capacity of the tank was that you fitted?
Anything you can remember would be good.

cheers

This is going a long way back. I think it was fitted with a Icom M501 the (the old 505) probably a Garmin 416 or similar. The underdeck tank should be around 75lt but it was also running a flexi tank in the bow locker. For the RB4 it only had the one jockey seat with a bucket seat behind, this was changed to make it saleable after the event.
That’s about it just a good basic solid boat built for the job.

thanks for that Keiron.
By mid November it should be almost a new boat again. There is a full refurb and repower going on at the moment.
I will post some pics. If you do remember to ask your mate if he has a record of the serial number I would appreciate it, it would just confirm the history of the boat.
thanks

Refurb

How's the refurb coming on?

Think I might have seen it at Amble marina, blue tubes with yellow hull and full keel guard. Not sure if it was yours but looked very impressive.

Have you made any further progress - any pictures?

yes that was it.
Repowered now, new tubes from Humber, couple of new hatch covers, new drain trunks,
the tank has been cleaned and pressure tested.
All seats have been re-upholstered, just have to refit them.
I need to tidy up the electrics, and the console needs a polish.
Fitted new fuel filter and housing, new battery. Have a new new VHF and aerial to fit,
new steering wheel to go on, and need to make a template for a new screen.
Definitely getting there, but havn't had it in the water as yet. Just need a week off work lol!
oh ... and I have to dispose of the SR4 cluttering up my garage!

Hope to have it finished in time for a weekend pottering up at Tayvillich mid March.
Have 10 hours of running in time on the motor to get done!

I finally got the full DVD sent to me of RB4, and have set myself the target of
taking her round the UK again in 2012. Just me - by myself. Something I have wanted to do for a while.

Wow, it was looking good when I seen it. Where will you be launching from?

I ordered the RB4 DVD last August from RIB magazine, still hasn't arrived. I think when they did it they had quite a bit of back up. Are you really considering round the UK on your own?

I need to do some more pics, but the boat is in storage until I get
back from work.

I will launch from the Groyne at South Shields (I expect) but keen to launch at Seahouses as well.
I am not going to attempt it in 8 days like they did, so am not so worried
about the back up. I have a plan I am working on with regard to the trip.

Will post some more pics later

Think its £25 to launch from Seahouses and the slip can get busy. Amble is £5 to launch then 45 minutes ish to get to Seahouses.

Its a nice run up the coast, lots to see on land and the occasional dolphin for company.

Plenty of seals as well, if you slow down a bit the seals usually pop up to see whats going on. Never ceases to amaze me.
