If my memory serves me correctly there has been a "measured mile" in Soton water for over 1/2 a decade. and you need permision to use it for performance testing. It would be great if this facility continues to survive.

Why don't they pull the wind surfers, rowers, dinghy sailers, yachties and the like? Surely they are a "vessel engaged in navigation"??

I get sick of getting rowed into by dipsticks on the non-tidal Thames who are going faster than me and I'm normally bob on the speed limit up there.

Surely they must also comply with the speed limit if its not there "for the sake of it" and to protect other water users?

Those rowing boats are very pointed and pretty darn fast!

I was going up Southampton water the other day and the High speed Cats seem to ignore the speed limit above the Hythe pier. Anyone know if they get special treatment? He did it within 200 yards of a police boat that deliberately doubled back to try and catch me out. (well thats what it looked like)

They always ask permission from VTS to exceed the speed limit. You can hear them request it on Ch12

On the River Deben speed limit is 8knots (apart from water ski areas)

At 8knts my Rib creates a fairly heafty displacement wake (18-24")

I can JUST stay on the plane at about 14knts (trimmed well in) so tend to do this and have never got complaints from yachties etc. (virtually no wash at all)

I understand the need to regulate the 'nutters' out there but please lets leave room for some common sense from those with experience

Might have to ask them on channel 12 for a laugh next time I'm up there...they can only say no.

In that case you could try going at 6knts . In Pompy Harbour some of the big gin-palaces can kick up quite a wake at 10knts so we ask 'em to slow down even more. A speed limit is not the fixed speed that you must travel at - it is the maximum speed. There are other considerations such as wake, etc., to be taken into account.

If you were driving a car on the roads you would probably be facing a ban for travelling at nearly twice the speed limit.

How does one define a "nutter"?

LOL Mark . I take it the "you" was as in the royal "you" and not me personally.
