There's only the one slip in Dartmouth - the one alongside the Higher Ferry. Fine at all states of tide - just been redone. Parking's the issue. You may need to launch, then go & park at the P&R at the top of hill unless you're lucky.

I have been from Salcombe to Dartmouth more times than I care to remember - It's no problem getting to Dartmouth as you always have the option of turning round and going back - it's the return journey that's the problem as you need to get back! The conditions change quickly and with the tide so a good forecast with a set of tide tables are essential.

Getting around Start Point can be very interesting.... Keeping in close is not always the solution as can also be very rough.

Yachties say to got out 2 miles and its ok, but have had trips when getting out that distance was an issue in my 5.6 m rib. However, pick the right conditions and its a great trip... 2 great boating locations in 1 day!

Enjoy!

Very true - Prawle point can also be fun when the tide is running against the wind. Another factor to remember is the sea fog that can come in quite quickly - even a simple Iphone Navionics App or similar can get you out of problems - not recommended but better than nothing!

I personally end up in the Victoria more often, I'm sure it's fine though - there is also a new place opened up in the old HSBC bank at the top of the Ferry steps that does some food and stuff called Sailor V (C'est la vie) - worth a look in the door.

Well, we made it round to Hope Cove and back today, once the fog had lifted. A little lumpy going around Bolt Tail but otherwise okay. Not sure I fancy trying to get round to Dartmouth, even in company, so will tow round to there tomorrow for a change of scenery.

Crabshell Inn was very good btw.

A trip to Dartmouth is well worth it. If the sea is rough head up river via Dittisham for refreshments.

Another good evening or lunch stop is The Maltsters on Tuckenhay Creek (tidal). Often have a BBQ and music, good food and beers. Also Stoke Gabriel worth a stop, beautiful ancient village good pub Church zhouse Inn.

You can then continue up to Totnes on a riding tide and moor at the council mooring on the right before the town.

Drove round to Dartmouth but decided against launching from the slip alongside the High Ferry as no jetty/pontoon for Mrs NSS to board from. We ended up launching at Blackness Marine (easy enough to find but bloody narrow lanes!). The slip is quite steep but fairly new concrete with pontoon alongside. Day launch charge was £12.50 (or £20 if you want them to drop you in with their tractor). Had lunch at the FBI (was okay for pub grub) and a wander around Dartmouth (after a quick blast outside the estuary). Made a nice change of scenery and was worth the trip round.

Wednesday evening we rode the Rising tide up Frogmore Creek (really quiet and picturesque) and had a quick drink in the Globe Inn. Very nice pub and we wished we'd had time to eat there as the menu looked very tasty, but alas had to head back to Salcombe.

A word of caution. We had booked into Batson Boatpark for the week. The slip and pontoons are excellent but we heard that a new Ribeye was stolen on Tuesday night (along with a Land Rover. The CCTV only covers part of the boatpark. Also, be aware that parts of the boatpark are prone to flood on Spring tides. We saw several cars sitting in close to a foot of water on Wednesday night!

Thanks for all the tips on where to go, and sorry we didn't get to meet up with RMS and pow2gran but hope you both had a good week too.

The cheeky thieves even stole the trailer to nick the RIB! Luckily we don't have that much trouble around here - especially in the summer. A friend of mine was stopped last night by the Police so at least they are checking boats and trailers out even if it is a bit late.

South Pool Creek is worth a visit if the tides are right up to the Millbrook pub although it can get very busy.

Generally people come alongside the slip after launching, or potter down to one of the pontoons & pick from there. Has to said Dartmouth is not the most rib friendly port!

Glad you know you had a good trip though

I dont know if anyone mentioned but 'The Fortescue' pub is the best one we have come across over the south hams. Warmest feel and the food is exceptional for the price... Dogs welcome
