PRV's

What are your thoughts on pressure relief valves. As you may have seen on previous threads, I am looking for a retube.

Hi RoyP

I've just had them fitted by Paul @ Ribbit when he was doing the other bits for me.

He said they weren't absolutely necessary in the UK, but I went ahead anyway as they were only £25 each and that was the time to do it.

My boat is 20 odd years old and I wanted to help protect those old glue seams, however Paul says after 20 years my seams will be well and truly stuck. He says PRV's are more use on new boats/tubes where the glue is still new and going off.

I am really pleased and impressed how hard the boat can now be blown up without worrying I've over inflated it.

If spending all that money, why not protect the tubes for an extra £75.

I can certainly see there use, as when the sun gets to the tubes there is quite a lot of expansion. What about shock and slamming with the boat movement and people sitting on the tubes, any ideas how this fairs.

I have left 3 messages and an email with Ribbit and still no reply.

Golly, he really should have been back to you, I know he fitted mine in before a trip to Holland to retube two Ribs, but it's a modern world with smart phones at all that. Shame because he does such a good job.

Re PRV's and the boat slamming, yes I completely agree, I stuffed my last Rib and the pressures on the tubes at that point must have been immense. Fortunately all was fine, but now I know about stuffing I think differently. Nobody sits on the tubes when we're going fast, I like to have them sat in seats.

In short, I just couldn't see a reason not to have PRV's.

I don’t know whether this is a common problem, but a friend of mine who was planning to and subsequently sold his 6 1/2 meter tornado, the pressure relief valves didn’t open. Boat racked high and outside, the relief valves had never been checked or serviced and with aged tubes and the expansion did the tubes and it ended up costing him a re-tube just to sell the boat. If you’ve got them test them periodically.

Thanks for that.

How do you test them?
