Protector 8.5 Cabin Rib Short Refit

After a small refit the Protector I recently purchased is nearly ready for relaunch. Many thanks to Craig, Daniel and the team from BHG in Lymington for all their help and advice. Very good guys form Sanders Sails for canvas as well.

Bury the bow

Good question!

If you buried the bow there is quite a swimming pool area to fill! That is why there is a serious sea hatch into the cabin area. If you look at the side photos of the boat you can see stainless round panels where there are cockpit drains (which are quite large) - like a sailing boat it would take time for the forward cockpit to drain and any blocjage by ropes or whatever would slow this down. With all the weight of water forward it would probably make the handling weird until it all ran out.

I brought the boat up from Weymouth and went through the race off St Albans, Anvil and Old Harry in some quite big winds and waves. Encouragingly the boat has height and good floatation volume forward in the bow - so only a really big breaking sea and daft behaviour on the throttle would make the bow really bury itself. Never say never though!

Andrew is right - the electric winch is factory fitted. The rib was originally used a mark layer for the Americas Cup Races in Valencia - so the winch was used to haul up floating marks in quite deep water rthat had cahin and anchor. V powerful bit of kit, well engineered.

These have been my dream RIB for the last few years.

Idealy it would have twin diesel inboards, but I seam to remember you can only spec the 8.5 with a single inboard.

Nasher.

Same in the rear area, is there just that little pokey hole to drain water out?

I absolutely love this RIB, but it seems strange to have such little drainage.

If you look at the pic there are in fact three drain holes to the rear which are really quite small. Any rope would easily block or limit the outflow. This is a large area and if you took a really huge sea it would take some time to drain. However there are two "big mother" bilge pumps which really pump out!
