Problems with new tube!! Help

Hi.
I just got my new tube for my old Carson rib.
But i am in doubt, how much off tolerance i should accept?
Please look at pictures.
My port Pontoon, is okay, placed close to the transom, and can be strapped in place.
But my Starboard, is way off i think??
Of course i can pull it in place, but it will mean a lot of tension on the materiel.
Should i accept this or return it to the factory??
Looking forward for you reply!!

They look fine, you will be putting negligable strain on the tubes when you fit them.
By all means contact the tube manufacturer for reassurance but that amount of gap is not a reason for rejection.

They look wrong to me, try contacting another tube manufacturer for their advice.

Nothing wrong with that. A curved tube, where the build is a panel on the top and one on the bottom can sometimes twist longitudinally, it’s simply a case of pulling it in to position.

Hi. Thanks for your reply.
I was buy my boat today and forced it in place. The results was clear.
I has now more folds in the potoon.
Also because it is off the center line, I can barely get it to lay close to the C. I have to pull a lot and it results in lifting it from it flaps for mount
But is that normal?
I will post pictures later

Okay, back at the computer.

As i wrote to day , tried to pull it back in place.

The result was. Dents and twist in the skin of the tube.
I can hardly get it in place at the transom C. And getting it close, i pull it out of it flaps for mounting.

Is that okay??? Pleas reply!

That's not right, the tubes should sit naturally in place otherwise other parts become stressed and eventually give way. Picture three clearly shows its not right

Odd that 1 side fits and the other be out, have you measured from say the inside seam strip to the attachment flap both sides to see if they’re the same measurement?

Hi everybody!
Thank for all your answers!!

When i first got the tube, and placed it, i could clearly see some thing was wrong.

Laying the tube on the floor, the starboard side was twisted. Instead of the flaps for mounting was 6 0´clock it was more like 7.30. The top skid patches was not top center. more placed from 12-2 o´clock
Also the air valves was like 10 higher mounted on the starboard pontoon, then on the port.

I called the company and said we have a problem!!

They asked me to mount it and just force it back. So i did! As you can see now on the new photos, pulling it tight at the transom, makes it jump out of the mounting flaps.
More dents and twist has shown in the skin.
The force i use to pull it tight is big. I had to use a heavy-duty strap, to keep it in place.

Trying to mount a pontoon that all ready has a twist pointing out, and buy trying to force it 15-20 cm anti clockwise , i believe is bad!!!
Unnecessary strain on the fabric, a break down will occur faster, if it was just laying naturally.

So please sum it up!!
reject or accept??

happy easter
Sune

Using the word forced says it all. If your not happy with an ill fitting and wrongly cut tubes then REJECT!

Have you tried bolting it all on? Or just laying the tube on and bolting the back? As once it’s all bolted it’ll probably straighten the back out.

A twist in a tube isn’t that big of an issue, as long as it’s been taken into account when attaching the flaps so they’re in the correct position it should go on.

It should not need to be forced, lets face it if something doesn't look right then it probably isnt right, looking at the flap where it secures to the hull it certainly does not look right, like I said before contact 3 or 4 manufacturers of ribs and get there advice, people who have a lot of experience in fitting tubes, im sure they would love to help even if its just to get some positive PR out of it.

I found a good page describing the various ways of fitting tubes to ribs,

http://www.tidel.biz/rib-tube-fitting/

look for the mechanical bolt on method diagrams. (looks like maybe your attachement strip on the tube is in the wrong place.)

Hi thx for your reply!
It has been bolted on. it put it more in line. But as you can see also made it more difficult to but it close to the transom.

I think you got it right. Also described before in a post, the flaps for mounting was not situated at 6 ´clock but more like 7.30. all that strain it not okay!!
I will contact some manufacturer to morrow.
Thanks for your reply.

Mmmm...

"Hi, I haven't given you any money, but I was wondering if you'd help me sort a problem with a tube someone else supplied?"

That can only end one of 2 ways - they want to be given money to fix it or they tell you to go away!

Sure they may want some good PR, but surely the PR is for the original tube supplier to sort (if indeed there is an issue...)

Its a Carson Rib is it a Carson Tube or a repro?

Is there a "correct bolting sequence"? In the same way as say screwing together a rectangular frame if you number the corners 1 to 4 you'd screw in 1 finger tight, then 3, then 2, then 1 then tighten them all up in the same sequence. Is there a similar requirement with a bolted tube? Bow ? Then what - back corners or work backwards - alternating sides as you go?

Hi.
Yes it is a Carson rib.
Supplied from a subcontractor for Carson ribs. The thing is that it use to be mounted with 11 individual pontoon, and we change the design, to on tube. After recommendation from the supplier.
Positioning of the tube:

Inflate all the chambers to 1.75-2 PSI

Position the tube on to the flange.

Fasten the bow

Fasten the tube on to the “C” /Transom

Tube has to be connected (at all time )to the “C” by glue or transom straps.

Centralise the attachment flaps on the flange and fasten them.

hope you can use it!!

If Carson sub-contracted it - then Barry Carson posts on here (as BarryCarson) and the company posts too (?macandrc I think). I'd let them have a chance to resolve the issues (bearing in mind its Easter Weekend so they haven't had much opportunity)

However, perhaps you mean you contracted it to someone Carson suggested... in which case start with the Tube supplier

I'm not 100% sure I understand why you are moving from a bolt on option to a glue on option? Did Carson recommend that? Seems at odds with their normal tubing strategy!

The company i use, is a carson suppler, but many are that! So they also have the drawing for many of his tubes.

I contacted the directly, to save money!

No i am not gluing it on!! I keep it to the original bolt on system!!
Only at the transom i should glue it on at the C on the transom.

So i wrote a letter to day to the manager to solve the problem!!

i hope for a positive reply!!
