Primer bulb

Hi,silly question,I'm fitting a fuel filter with water trap and unsure which side to fit primer bulb,before or after filter? Or don't it matter

It doesn't really matter what side you put it on.

I put mine between the tank and filter as I was finding it difficult to prime the filter and water trap after changing it.

...whereas mine are fitted between tanks and filters. It's a lot easier to prime the fuel system if you're not trying to suck the air out of a large canister filter first.

Primer bulbs are designed to push, not pull. Easier to push the fuel into the filter, than suck it through.

your right. its easier for the bulb to pull a short distance then push fuel but if you put the bulb before the filter you can suck any crap out of tank (if crap in there) into bulb and can lodge itself inside the bulb valves which then would render it useless. Tank---filter ----bulb----engine! This is how one of the Main rib builders rig them.
The primer bulb should be powerful/new enough to draw through other wise get a better one!"

I have my bulb before filter.....but then I do use two separate fuel tanks with independent fuel lines.

Not had any problems yet.....

When I first changed my filter there were big bits of fiberglass in it. All had gone though the bulb and not clogged it up. That said I've always carried a spare bulb as part of my basic spares/toolkit

Due to logistics my primer bulb is mounted after my filter. It rests nicely out of the way inside the outboard mounting bracket. I have accidentally disconnected my fuel line twice now and drained my fuel filter, along with replacing the fuel filter, and never had a problem getting fuel back into the carbs, within a reasonable amount of pumps.

Sounds like it really doesn't matter where the fuel bulb is mounted. A piece of debris will stop it from functioning until it is cleared, or a failure of the bulb check valve. Would a failure stop you from getting out on the water? If so maybe you should carry a spare bulb. I always figure I could stand on my closed fuel tank and force it into the carbs.

Wherever you finish up putting it, try & get it as close to vertical as possible, or at least leave yourself enough hose to turn it vertical when you pump it. Arrows pointing "up".
