Pressure washers

Petrol v Electric...

ebay has 5.5HP petrol units for £190

Or there are a huge variety of electric ones from £99.00.

What's going to have the power to get the grime off a hull...?

I have had both - a Nilfisk electric one (current) and an ebay petrol one (deceased). Petrol one was very noisy, and vibrated around so much when I used it in the marina I had to lash it down to prevent it from falling in the water. It was also pretty heavy to lug around. I prefer the electric one, and I have a generator should I wish to use it where there isn't any power.

The nozzle fitted also has quite a bearing on how effective it is at getting the grime off.

My Nilfisk has an adjustable nozzle which is very handy.

Quality products. Even if it means increasing your budget some-what, get something that produces at least 140 bar. Second-hand is fine, but check the auto-start stop works (with water flow on), it doesn't leak and it achieves operating pressure. Petrol ones are usually higher pressure, usually hot water steam units, and most will have had a hard life in commercial sector washing lorries dawn till dusk!

Regards shifting grime, a small deck scrubber and mild detergent works wonders, then use the Karcher.

I have a Nilfisk and can't fault it.
Always seem to come tops in reviews in various magazines.

If you keep an eye out in machine mart they sometimes have offers on. Mine came with a free wet and dry hoover that would have been £70

Flow rate is almost as important as pressure. The smaller machines just can't chuck out enough water, so worth looking at the specs before choosing.

I got what many would call a nice electric for free as it didn't work. Replaced the electrical circuit breaker and off I went to clean...well kinda. Having used gas powered one previously they just don't compare to electric. My opinion is go gas, and get something with some power to it.

+1 for dirt blast nozzle. Excellent on paths and patios etc as well as boats

+1 for petrol. A lot more powerful than any electric washer and many of them suck so you don't need a pressurised hose supply. A water butt, pond or even sea water will do as long as you flush with fresh water afterwards meaning you can use it almost anywhere. If you have low pressure in your hose it will suck the water out if needs it.

+1 for getting max water flow as well as pressure. Look at litres per minute as well as psi. It's all very well having a high pressure jet but if there's not a lot of water coming out at that pressure it's not going to shift much.

A lot of petrol ones come with wheels so you can move them round easily. Having spent £950 on a petrol washer at work a few years ago it's was well worth the money spent on it. It shifted anything off of anything.

Have both petrol an electric. Currently use Karcher Xpert XD7125 for pressure washing hulls, tubes, engines etc on recovery from the water. Have to say, it's pretty good.

Used to Use Nilfisk, but the connection between the machine and hose-reel always failed after a few weeks.

Use a Demon petrol washer 3000psi for washing boats that have been in the water a few months. It draws water from a bowser or even direct from the sea. Exceptionally good and reliable (cost £1,800 though)!

Here we go again, we also sell /repair p/washers.

Karcher are SH*T! Their commercial Honda engined cold gear is OK, avoid the rest.

All small B&Q electric p/washers are one shot wonders and a waste of cash.

Demon and Brendon (made in Somerset) are our faves.

Try to go low end commercial rather than DIY if the budget will allow. We have a tatty 1400 PSI electric Demon at work/my place, a brilliant tool.

You'll note, no attempt made to 'trade' whatsoever.

Yeah, that's Brendon, awesome kit. The hire trade only use Brendon and Demon.

We sold a Diesel (Lister) Brendon 45F to a pig farmer from Dorset a couple of weeks ago. He rang to say how amazed he is with it, reckons it'll drill holes in the ground.
