I'd have preferred to see a few more articles and features of relevance to robbers and small powerboaters. What about "how to buy a second hand rib", rib maintenance, winterise your outboard. Advice from readers, a sort of tips and tricks feature where rhe old lags can share their experience with us n00bs. Group test features: a readers and pros panel evaluate products.

Of course that would take more work than banging together a bunch of press releases and marketing blurb...

I've been looking at this post for about 20mins and wondering if I should post on this or not. Well here goes. The trouble is from my experience as a builder of ribs and I suspect this is the same for other trade members is that on the occasions we try to impart our experience and knowledge which has been gathered through years of trial, errors and experiments we get some other guy who's on his second rib telling us we're talking bollocks, after a while it gets annoying.
Although I do this for a living it doesn't stop me offering free impartial advise to help other less experienced ribbers. God know I can rant and be grumpy with the best of them but I like to think I could help someone without getting the crap kick out of me by someone who's just done his first channel crossing.
Well that's my thoughts on it and I guess this happen every day of the week over most trades

the smorgasboard of skill level and experience of its posters, and by that token, also some of the criticisms posted here about PBR, that there isn't a smorgasboard of opinion or skill / income levels in the articles.

(I just wanted to use 'smorgasboard' twice in the same post -
just in case there was a competition or challenge or something....)

Or to look at it slightly differently: Whilst there are many good RIB builders in the UK few of them are actually that good at communicating with the ordinary public. It takes great skill to write compelling and engaging copy and to direct discussion in a constructive manner rather than get drawn into an argument. Usually RIB builders got where they are by having a good understanding of boat building and design not by being good journalists or diplomats!

Its also clear just how much time forums (and other social media) can sap from your day, whilst it is easy to think that it would be OK if it was for your job the reality is many builders could spend all day here and not sell any more boats (some might sell less!).

You may be right Poly, I know plenty of good boatmen who find it hard to string a sentence together but are second to none when it comes to do there job, on that note, its even more important to listen to what they are saying if they feel its important enough to try to explain something and find it difficult enough to get there point across, can you visualise how frustrating that would be to an old guy when you've got some smart mouth giving it large just for a laugh.
I alway remember a post where I lost it, there was a chap who posted about a boat that had micro blisters on it, he was going to keep it on a trailer an want to know if it was alright, I reckon that it was osmosis and as it was on the trailer I wouldn't worry that much about as it was minimal, I got some matey from up north posting , why bother with surveys, we can do it on line with you, it might be voids, how do you know, blah blah blah blah blah, he was some office guy from up north somewhere, anyway eventually I offered to do the work for nothing if the other smart mouth paid for the guys survey and it was found to be something else, didn't hear no more, but my point is I could quite easily have said f#¥*k you lot and that would be another trade non poster

Biff - I remember that thread well. It's not quite how I remember it! As I recall the suggestion was simply that he should post some pictures to confirm they were blisters not voids/bubbles in the gel... if I remember rightly you lost the plot that anyone might describe something as a blister that wasn't a blister, and that nobody should be allowed to question your expertise at seeing the problem from the other side of the country without so much as a picture ;-)

Still glad to see you are not holding a grudge!

I don't hold grudges and I've got no problem with northeners, I'm not getting into this again, blisters are blisters, voids are voids, if you don't know the difference and what causes them it's better to keep quite, what I have got a problem with and it's a big problem on my part, I have zero tolerance for twats and have no buffer between what I think and what I say
