Power Trim

I have just taendelivery of my new Avon 6.2 with Honda 130 HP

This is my first boat fitted with Power Trim

Any tips on how best to use this feature

(i.e. How does it work?)

Basics - cos its late and ive just got in from boat club - on flat water trimming in will drop the bow and would get you over the hump and onto the plane quicker then trim out to lift bow and decrease wetted are and watch the revs climb for the same throttle setting. Eventually the boat will either become unstable and start to chine walk or the prop will ventilate so trim back in a bit. Trim back in a bit for turns to allow the hull to get a grip on the water. In rough seas with a following sea trimming out will prevent the boat nosediving off the top of a wave and stuffing itself in the trough. Going into a head sea trim in a little to allow the bow to drop and the hull to pierce the wave and prevent taking off so much.
Beware when you trim in fully as some boats have a habit of diving off to the left at speed and a turn could make the bow dig in and wildly exagerrate the turn
apart from that its a piece of cake and its ever so satisfying to play with on a trip or to impress the bystanders when youre back on shore - makes a wonderful noise!
Ps when will this ****** wind stop - its blowing a hooligan here - but forecast to ease off tomorrow and weekend - yippeeeeeee

further to my last post our humber was re-engined yesterday and I took it out to run it in today - Snow on the lake district hills and a 4/5 NE blowing off them- b***** cold but B****** wonderful to get out for a long run again - roll on summer and some calmer weather. The boat now goes off to the right a bit and not left if you trim in too far - same engine same holes same prop but altogether better feel to it

with power trim.

As stated above it has numerous uses,

-helping tighter grippier turns
-pulling off better with a skiier
-stopping porpoising on bouncy water
-balancing steering & on my last glass boat you could actually steer the thing on trim alone
-trying to stay dry when the red funnel wash is heading straight for you !
- maximising speed on flat water
- trimming for economy

loads of experimenting for you to do

The Red Funnel wash is the wash made by the Red Funnel Ferries! These run between the Isle of Wight and various places on the South Coast.

This thread comes at exactly the right moment for me...I'm just shopping around for my new RIB, a YAM 470.
For the engine I opt for a Yamaha 4 stroke 40HP...but shall I go for the power trim or not?
On my Zodiac (inflatable) I stick a wet finger up in the air before take off and then set the trim manually, on the way back I might adjust a bit, but that's it for the day.

Maybe I should use it more, but most of the time I run in calm conditions and can't be bothered too much with fiddling of knobs...

Is it worth the extra expense on such a small boat? Will I pound my head into the wall one year from now if I don't choose this option? All questions...hoping for answers!

It a bit like air conditioning in your car, before you had it didn't matter - you wern't bothered. Now you got it you can only fear what life was like without it.

Take my advice get the Power Trim/tilt...

The ferries I was reffering to are the jet powered catamarans which power out of southampton water over to Cowes, they dont take prisoners

I swear they are manned by blindfolded kamakasi pilots, get too close to the rear of one of these going pass and at best you'll get wet, at worse could easily sink a small speed boat

the adventurous use it as there party to trick to get some air on otherwise flat water

Funny thing is you get hit with a double wammy because of twin hulls, two sets of washes !! If the first doesnt sink you the second will !!! LOL

and if you pass behind his moorings at cowes to go into the public mooring just as he drops it in gear you go sideways very quickly
