Petrol to Diesel?

We currently have a 2 stroke Yamaha 60HP petrol engine on our RIB (I don't know the exact age, but I do have the serial number, so presumably I can somehow find this out and its definitely older than 10 years).

I believe it is the 60FETO model (Power trim & tilt, autolube).

Given the lack of petrol available on the river I was wondering how plausible it would be to do some sort of exchange for a 4 stroke diesel engine, similar HP ideally.

Is this kind of swap plausible and if so what would I need to think about in terms of pitfalls?

Also, in the perfect world of course I would like to do this for no cost, i.e. I find someone who wants to switch from diesel to petrol. Of course I realise this is not necessarily realistic, so what sort of cost implications are likely if we were to switch to say a 50HP 7 year old Diesel engine (I plucked that age/HP out of thin air, the RIB is a HUMBER 5.5m, happy to listen to suggestions)?

Sorry thats a bit waffley, but if anyone has any advice or perhaps interest I would love to hear your thoughts!

That yam is probably one of the best motors you could have.

I have no problem with the engine, its just the lack of availability of petrol, diesel is so much easier to get hold of!

It would have to be an inboard and not practical at all to convert without great expense - cheaper to buy an inboard diesel boat.

Some one can prob give a fuller response, but AFAIK the JP fuels are miltary diesel alternatives for military use, but with different flash points (safer in use /when stroed in bulk on aircraft carriers say).....I don't believe any of them are a direct replacement for Diesel but can run in Diesel engines....prob with changes required due to lubrication properties etc....

We used to carry Jet A1, which is what the run commercial aircraft on, and most of the others are similar with different flashpoints. They are all basically Kerosene types, similar to what you have in a heating oil system at home.

I am told that a diesel will run on it, but smoke a bit.

I was on a ship with a deisel outboard. It was fecking huge, and pushed our 6M rescue boat along at an almighty 6Knots. It was physically the size of a 175HP petrol. Bloody great big gutless piece of crap.

I would buy a set of sails and turn into a WAFFI before I used a diesel outboard.

Dunno, I know kerosene's not a million miles away from diesel, our heating oil delivery docket always says "MUST NOT BE USED AS ROAD FUEL" across it I know that they will , might be a handy way to get rid of the Christmas Glenfiddich
