We were taught on the sea survival alway pay the extra for PLB with GPS, since without they will only position you to a few miles with homing becaon to guide people in.

So if operating on the forth in sunny scotland, with out GPS the CG get to know you need help on the Forth!

So pay the extra get the GPS model, I have the model mention nice and small.

If you want Sea Water activated you buy an EPRiB but not so personal!

Just to add a new thought to this thread, please remember that a huge proportion (McMurdo claim 90%, I've seen other stats that claim even higher) of EPIRB-initiated distress alerts turn out to be false alarms.

So do take care with them, the instructions will guide you on how to avoid false alarms on the model you choose, do register your product with the Coastguard (it's easy), and do know what to do if you find that you have accidentally triggered an alarm.

Gibbo - we are at the Boat Show later next month - if you have a make/model and sum of money you wish to spend no more than - let me know and we'll see if we can find it for you cheaper - can then ring on the day and you can speak to the seller etc etc

PM me if it's of any use - I believe the show runs until the 16th Jan??

I'm looking for one as well so we might be able to get a few extra pennies off - as Malthouse suggested by buying more than one. Alternatively Malthouse might be able to sort something for a few of us on here if we were buying more than one - apologies Martin if I'm making a rather big assumption!!

The other way of looking at it is that your boat is overpowered and unless you use less throttle it will happen again - maybe get a smaller engine and make the boat safer? It clearly has stability issues beyond a certain speed as Rogue has already confirmed.

Not having a go, but stating what I feel should be the obvious?

Cookee, i value your advice as you are far more experienced and knowledgeable on this subject. I have a 50 which is the recommended maximum for the boat so i wouldn't say it was overpowered but i believe like most smaller SR's they do chine walk. I was probably guilty of going flat out in what was favourable conditions, but i doubt i am not the only one? But yes point taken.

Like a lot of small Ribs, I think that the max HP is what the transom will handle, and when the boat is full or being used as a rescue boat to tow boats full of water the extra power would be useful, but they are overpowered for flat out leisure use, some of the deeper V designs with a fine bow can also bow steer enough to throw people out when driven "enthusiastically" downwind in a swell - less power would make them a lot safer!

I know I probably sound like an old fart and a spoilsport, but it's how I see it!

As an ex-McMurdo employee you may consider my comments biased, but I honestly believe this is a good product that like the older Max and MaxG variants will prove itself to be a life saver many times over.

Having seen the amount of work and preparation that went into designing and manufacturing it, I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone.

Chewy - if you want a system that can relay your position when you are unconscious - then perhaps the Spot satellite tracker system (http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=101) might be an option - you can set it to automatically update position every 10 minutes. Or even one of the cheap anti-theft (GSM) trackers in the boat (not waterproof) would give a pretty good starting point for a search. Of course if unconscious these won't tell anyone your in trouble - but if you are overdue they'd know were to start looking. The spot tracker (being waterproof) would be practical to put in you pocket and so could be used by a conscious person to signal their distress.

there's a few resellers of the spot trackers on here.
