Went for a blast around Jersey this morning - what a thrill, crisp, cold air, moderate sea state. I managed to get 56knots out of her.....do you think this is fast enough?

Presumably thats usibg wide open throttle with your twin 225's so what, 160Litres per hour consumption at that speed

? Bet you didn't do it for long even at Channel Islands petrol prices.

I had full tanks and forced myself NOT to look at the fuel gauge!
Frightened myself though - awesome power

How come your faster than "Seahound" with 150 hp less?

faster than 'Seahound', we will have to see about that !!! I think we will have to start our own 'round the islands race' in the summer Charles (Start St Helier east about to Alderney via the 'Race', round Alderney through the 'swinge' then back to start via the little Russell/Guernsey) . Unofficial of course followed by a piss up round yours. Last one in gets the beer.
There might even be some other petrol heads out there that would want to play ??

If you pay for the fuel, I will be there with bells on, Steve.
I do not know the top speed of Seahound, but my Rib at WOT measured on the Lowrance Plotter was indicating 55 Knots and on the other display (paddle wheel) it was 56 knots?!
So I reckon I was doing around 53 knots, probably could have gone faster, had full tanks and it was quite lumpy. Quick enough for me anyway

Fast, but didn't think that Scorpions were going so fast.
I have a test here of the same (similar) boat as yours with same engines and flat sea and it says tops 48 knots with curves etc etc and light load onboard.
But if you say you were doing 56 I believe you

That speed sound about right. I actually used your boat several years ago just after it was originally built. I took it to southampton from Lymington for lunch with some of the guys from Scorpion. That speed if I remember was about right. Great boat and very good ride.

Have you seen the new 10mtr open Scorpion. It is a lovely boat. 2 x 300 Yanmars very nice.

Manos. Scorpions are quite fast boats. Not as fast as the Mark Pasco ribs but Scorpions are built mainly for cruising, mind you some of them do over 70 knots so its not too bad. Fuel bill would not be so funny though.

Once I have fitted my new Raymarine plotter I will be able to verify the speed with 4 bits of kit! As far as the 10m goes - I was fortunate enough to do the CI cruise last year in Hot Lemon, truly sensational, much more beamier than mine though. I spent 6 hours on my rib this past week-end and find myself constantly 'playing' with the trim. I suppose its like any new boat, in my opinion. You have to 'build' a relationship' with her and get to know the best trim settings, weight distribution etc to get the best out of her - the boat that is!

I'd guess 43-56kts seems reasonable enough Charles. I have got 52kts out of Blue Ice which is considerably lighter but has 250hp less than you! I suspect with full tanks I'm down to 45-48. Frankly thats fast enough for me 'cos even HPDI's suck the go juice like its going out of fashion at full throttle!!

APOLOGIES!!

As a matter of fact have spoken with a friend of mine who manufactures Scorpions in Greece. Apparently you are right and I was WRONG.
He said that the boat can go even a bit faster if you paly with the props.
The boat I saw in the test although it was a Scorpion had smaller engines hence lower speeds.

I am looking to replace my twin 300hp mercs for obvious reasons, with twin Evinrude ficht outboards onto a 9.5m cabin scorpion. What do you reckon the best size outboards would be if cruising and distance was the priority ? i would like a cruising speed of 35-40kts in the calm.

Suggestions?

Obviously consumption too. Have you asked Scorpion in the UK??

I would go along with Alan, Steve. Twin Evinrude Ficht 225's. The Yams are first option, but too pricey. Also, you might consider speaking to a mate of mine in Jersey (Graham Tanguy) from GT Marine - official Evinrude, Merc, Mariner agent in Jersey. He is also the best outboard engineer in this neck of the woods. Give me a call sometime and I'll talk to you about it.

If you want to Save youself a fortune then stick a single volvo Kad 300/Dpg in it or yanmar 315/bravo 2x.

£20k outlay including engine mounts. 12gph of red x 38knts.

No contest.Unless you rely dont like diesl.

If you insist on going petrol outboards then see www.screamandfly.com they will help as its a forum like this but specilising in outbords and performance boats.
