Painting Over Varnish

Does anyone know the correct way to prep and paint a transome that was previously varnished.

Thanks in advance

Guess there are many good ways, but i would sand the varnish down, prime with epoxy and finish whit polyurethane paint. International or Hempel are ok brand's

Ment to write epoxy primer(undercoat). Her something i used on a few boats, but guess any brand is as good. Don't get the polybest on your hands, it will stay forever... almost.

I think they add little gold in the paint as its not cheap....
