Ian oh I was thinking of Mrs Jackeen, she has been taking the mickey!

Code 2 is 60 miles and thats serious extra kit, not sure it would be worth the effort.

I know it was Mrs Jackeen that you were on about, i read somewhere that she thought it was going on to much, but she would never go on to much ( would she )

There is one thing though, if i were to go a console change, i would just read the thread again, it was better than any workshop manual i have ever seen.

Just wait till i do the engine change in the future.

I was also disappointed to hear of the demise of roos project as I was hoping to follow the progress as I am doing the same.

Talking of repowering a pacific, I am now looking at a 300hp Mercruiser Vm Dtronic which is rated as light commercial. My main concern is that I want the rib coded and kitted out for commercial charter and don't want the engine to explode any time in the next 5 - 10 years!!

Since you guys seem to be the Pacific gurus I wonder if you have any pertinent advice. I have been tempted just to go with a Mermaid - but I get the impression that they are a bit behind the times in terms of power to weight ratio and efficiency.

Any thoughts?

Couple of things for you to think about:
I looked at a lot of engines to repower it, think I'd finally settled on Yanmar 240 but not close coupled and bravo2 and a reasonablly cheap combination. I fell in love with GM's V8 diesels in principle, but there are a few horror stories floating around www.marinediesel.nu and also peninsular engines in the US.
I have been told that someone had a 250Hp six cylinder sabre driving a P22 through a 101 leg and didn't have any problems, don't think I'd like to try this - too much torque!
I went to look at a P22 in Cowes that had had the engine box moved right aft and a close coupled Volvo KAD 32 fitted, according to what I heard from people down there the deck at the stern was awash at rest, and water continually found it's way in - was kept afloat by a bilge pump! I suspect that you have to have a mid mounted engine in a P22.
Another engine that may be worth a look is the Steyr marketed by Mermaid, I think it's about 260Hp frommemory but very light, apparentlt it's been fitted to quite a few superyacht tender ribs.
Have to say that I bought a Sternpowr leg and Mermaid turbo 4 to get it going with a view to repowering it later.

How about this? Mercruiser 220Hp 6Cyl. With the higher RPM, should be less torque than a 200Hp Mermaid! You'd have to change the gearbox though.

Looks like this Pacific refurb thing is turning into some sort of a hip craze!!

Im also trying to figure out what engine to install in a Pacific although price is a major factor in my case!!

Anybody know of any good, chep diesels about? (preferably 200hp+)

That Merc looks veeeeery nice though!!

Are there any photos floating about of these projects then? Would be interesting to see the variation in peoples ideas...

Roo, do you know if the Sternpowr leg and shaft can be connected to any engine or is it a 'Mermaid only' set up?

The advantage of putting a Mermaid in a Pacific is thats what the boat originally had fitted so engine mounts, exhaust, etc all in the right place. Plus there are lots of them about normally around the 2K mark. Although at that price I would have Mermaid do a check on it when buying jus to be safe.

Based on a ford block you know were to go for spares then and the 4 cly engine easy to work on with lots of space. The engine is low tech purely mechanical therefore if it does go wrong you stand a chance of fixing it yourself.

Seb, assuming the engine turns in the right direction then anything is possible, just depends how much agro you willing to let yourself in for. I prefer the "KISS" approach.

Sounds very sensible and i guess that if the original set up was passed by Halmatic and the MoD, you can be pretty certain that its sound!!

Extra power and speed is always nice but i could see a repower turning into a nightmare....moving engine mounts, making the transom fit the new drive, making enough room in the engine box itself, extra fuel consumption, extra weight, cost, the list goes on......

The 6 cylinder mermaid looks good but its hell of a lump....id hazard a guess and say that the extra few horses wouldnt make all that much difference (but what do i know!!)

Working on it in the engine bay wouldnt be too easy either.

Anyway, not sure if a pacific would be a pacific without its unique sound - an attention demanding note!

Back to the drawing board......................
