Outboard course

Many years ago I did the RYA level 2 course but is there a course which will teach me more about outboard repair/maintenance.I dont have a 2nd engine & believe this would be prudent to increase my knowledge.I live in Oxfordshire so hants, sussex Dorset would probably be closest? Also I would like to know of cost & where I can do the VHF course.Have been meaning to do it for ages. Thanks

Hi Jon, There are a number of people who post here who do the VHF training try doing a search and drop one of them a mail many on the south coast. I did one in Poole couple of years back.
With regard to the outboard I looked for a course but had no luck. I have picked up two books that we good (IMHO) and have helped me .
The RYA book of Outboard Motors by Tim Bartlett
Outboard Trouble shooter by Perer White
Hope this helps

The BSAC occasionally runs a basic outboard maintenance course.
I should know, I set it up 6 years ago.
Normally 2 or 4 courses a year, adverts in Dive Magazine.
Recommend the yorkshire one. The one I started it with and the chap doing it has my old Northcraft Binky the boat.

Outboard Course

Hi,

I did a one day course several years ago at the Marine Training Centre (probably wrong name, but part of the Southampton Institute) at Woolston.

Pretty good course with the option of taking your own engine along with you.

Cheers,

John

I went on the Soton Uni course earlier this year. It was good. I would not touch my Opti 150 thou.

I'll have to go to the gym a bit more before I'll be able to take my four stroke

Did this course last week with Dave. Was £80 well spent I think.Their Intermediate power boat course is £150 which is loads cheaper than others I have seen.
After the outboard course I can now winterise & service my own engine, albeit on a basic level.

Tim,

As Jon said it was a good course.

The course started dead on 9, and finished at around 17:15, with only a very short break for lunch and coffee. The course covered changing the following things impeller, engine oil, thermostat, gear box oil, spark plugs and quite a few other bits and pieces which I cant remember.

We got given a box full of new parts which we had to put on. You could either work on a four stroke or two storke engine. The people working on the two stroke engines could also take a part the carb. The four stroke engine that Jon and I worked on was still on the back of one of the Universitys Ribs, which had obviously been wheeled in ready for us to service it, so if you see a university rib with a four stroke on the back unable to start, or puffing out black smoke you know why!!!

The guy who took the course was very good, and seemed to know everything there was to know about engines, he had been in the business for years.

Dave
It was well worth the money.
