That's a good one awesome .. Ive been buzzed by Adult Minke's and even hit by them when at rest as they can be quite inquisitive, but ive never seen Orcas do that ever, they usually keep to them selves.

Incredible footage when you think about the speed the boat and the physical mass of the Orcas. Been buzzed by a Minke before, and just a little too close for comfort, so know the feeling. New pants please.

Yeah I dont think folks realise the size of these things. even when you are in your own comfort zone of your well prepared RIB .. when a Minke surfaces next to you and all you can see is its 6 feet wide back/body as it arcs silently next to you .. kinda humbles you

Its going back a good few years but a couple of our boat club members had a fright about 8 miles off Redcar Teesmouth when an Orca whale decided to circle them whilst they were fishing , frightened the life out of them when it suddenly surfaced alongside their 18 ft boat then decided to follow very close alongside them , sh..t them both up when they couldent out run it , when they got back One of the old fishermen reckoned that it wasent un common & was on its way up the coast to the Farnes looking for seals .

I was diving north of Lerwick last autumn and on the way to the dive site watched 4 orcas catch a seal and play with it before killing it.
Must admit to being slightly nervous getting in the water less than 1/2 mile away in a black drysuit and splashing around underwater while they were still in the vicinity....

Yeah, as you say, humbling.

I was sailing from Liverpool down to the Canaries in 2009, running before a force 8 which was exhilarating but required full concentration on the helm in order not to broach, when a Minke surfaced 50 metres fine off the port bow.

It proceeded to swim casually alongside for 30 minutes just 6 feet away, maintaining it's position effortlessly, but I can assure you it wasn't a 'relaxing' experience for me due to the weather conditions!

All I can say is that it was certainly wide awake and made sure I remained similarly 'focused'.

By the way, has anyone else out there suffered the effects of smelling whale breath? Indescribable.

I was convinced the Orcas are trying to work out how to eat the large screaming "seal" (woman) on the back of the boat

Yes ... I was trying to get close to a Minke once for the benefit of one of my crew, just pootling about one day, when it surfaced about 10 yards in front of the boat and blew off, we were static at the time on a calm sea .. (and it made my visitors day) they don't seem to always do it when surfacing, but when they do, it makes it a lot easier to locate them on the less windier days. Dolphins & porpoises seem to need to breath much more often (or the type round us anyway) but whales seem to go for an age without breathing, a good 10 minutes I'd say

Taking advantage of a windless and flat calm day I was out fishing not far from Lerwick about a mile out. There was absolute silence, the fish weren’t biting but it was such a beautiful day it didn’t matter. Then from just behind me I heard a loud whooshing sound. Now I’ve never heard a whale exhaling through the blowhole but I knew this is what it was. I suddenly thought about the large pod of orcas that had been spotted just south of me earlier in the week and to be honest for a split second my imagination got the better of me. I felt very vulnerable in my 3.2m sib. I looked round and could see the tell tale ripples of a large whale as it went down about 20m or so away. What to do? Sit still and hope it goes away, start rowing for shore or start the outboard and hope it scares it off. Sh**t. As these thoughts were going through my head I fixed on the ripples and then I heard another whoosh. I turned again just in time to see a porpoise that looked about 3 feet long break the surface and dive down. What a relief. It’s made me think about what I would do if I came across something larger.
