I had a miserable old aunt that used to live in Barrassie on the Ayrshire coast .. she used to make us go out and look for coal to burn in her fire.

It was stuff that got washed ashore from the clyde puffers that used to go up and down the coast many years ago on their way up to the Scottish Isles

On one of the days I'd done a power of work in collecting all these black objects as a youngster, and brought a tray back to her .. the miserable old midden threw half of them back out because she thought they were useless .. I never forgave her .. It dented me as a child forever

Round here it's poplar that's in plentiful supply, the bark looks a little ugly though apart from that it burns well

It depends on what you do with it (e.g. gas fired central heating is more efficient than an open fire), but in general gas is cheaper: http://www.coals2u.co.uk/fuel-price-comparison

I've fitted a Mitsubishi MVHR in our place, it's the future, an eco sensation. Check it out.

The tricky bit is making a 120yo building air-tight, routing two 6" ducts to most rooms and insulating the life out of the place.

We visited a newly built, expensive eco new build yesterday, owned by a retired Doc. He'd had a specialist firm supply, fix, commision and sign off his MVHR. They'd made a complete pigs ear of the whole job.

Agree.......

Father-in-law was from Glasgow, joined the merchant navy and moved to Capetown thirty years ago. Wont hear a bad word said against it unless it's his own!

Another fan of the Clearview here. Mainly Sycamore being chucked in ATM, but also the odd bit of Holly, Cherry and Elder. Would love to connect it into the central heating circuit, but just a tad too complicated with safety reliefs and all and still be able to maintain both systems.

Clearview are excellent traditional stoves. For a bit on contempary chic, you need to go Scandi.
