What make of refill kits you looking for I will see what the cost is, postage to Ireland might be of issue though - compressed air they no likely and you will find you hammer will be loctited on to fire mech.

Pickey Dave () and Kerny have raised a topic that I have been thinking about. Life jacket cost V Life jacket Quality.

As I see it, once you have checked the boxes for usage and fit, they're all ISO or EN rated life jackets and should do their job (which is to float you face up etc).

It's Hazard and Risk.

The Hazard is falling in.
The Risk is drowning.
Wearing ANY LJ reduces the risk.
Wearing any 150N Auto reduces a very great deal of the risk.
Will wearing a £300 150N jacket reduce it further? - a bit perhaps, but I suspect very little...

You don't need to spend 300 quid, I use one of these and they are good quality very unrestrictive and the complete rearming kits are about 25 quid.

Yes, those ARE nice but I'm looking at 150N. I'm also wondering about the harnesses. You pay for a harness that gives you a tricky closure (for non-boaters) so I end up helping landlubbers and newbies put their jacket on. The non-harness types have a snap buckle and tightener that any fool can use. The more expensive jackets don't have that...

If you're not going to clip yourself to a boat (which I think we as ribnobbers won't be doing) do you need a harness version?

Marine mega store would do you a hammar and cylinder for ~£30. Or a hammar alone for £20.

Do you need someone else to test or do you check cylinder if its a bit light pull the handle and top up with a touch of air from a compressor via the mouth piece. then leave 24hours and check still rigid.

If the cylinder is OK then use the mouth piece to inflate via a compressor...

If they are unused then even if they are only £45 you might only be looking at £20 to "recharge" them so 50% saving...

That's what I've got :-)...it's been replaced by a new design now .

I still carry my older ones as spares if I think I may find a bod who needs one. Or I strap one on and jump in for practice...AJ had the pics!.

I'd suggest jumping in wearing one is worth the cost of a new cylinder etc especially if not done the sea survival course bit :-)

I wouldn't use a compressor line anywhere near a lifejacket. Best to use a low-pressure pump - manual bike pump would do it.

The other critical aspect is to inspect the lifejacket carefully around seams and folds as these are the likely failure points.

Sorry wasn't thinking high powered air tool job, was thinking of my rattly car tyre one that runs off 12V and takes about 3 days to pump up a car tyre...

No if I remember rightly the thread was about life jackets in general. Mainly the thickness of the bladders.
