Oban - Cottages by the Water

Hi

Anyone know of any nice cottages to rent for a weeks Holiday by the water near Oban ???

Does it have to be Oban? Up that way, I stayed at a cottage overlooking Portavadie marina on Loch Fyne in May. Highly recommended. Here is a pic from the cottage. If interested drop me a line and I will give you contacts

.... and there is always Puffin Dive Centre - modern chalet/bungalows rather than cottages but right on the waters edge with slip and moorings. Nicola is always helpful

The Barn is supposed to be alright but I hear its a bit dear but there is a big caravan park with its own slip that hires chalets at Tralee.
Depends on exactly what you want and where?

23 miles south of Oban - Ardfern. Loch Craignish cottages, and there are others in the area, in Ardfern and Craobh. Great place to explore by RIB. Slipways, good chandlerys and boatyards and pubs. Why do you want to go to Oban? Facilities there are poor for small boats and the town caters for coach tours. Christmas dinners start in November. You might, just, find a real shop in between all the fast food 'restaurants'.

It does have Tescos (if you can find it - they keep the approach roads secret) and the cheapest petrol around.

Facilities are a bit better than that in Oban!
There are plenty of places to eat that are not "fast food", in fact the town specifically banned Mcdonalds and KFC from the town and there a number of good restuarants.
There may be things missing but overall Oban is the place with the most attractions and facilities in this part of the world. The flipside to this is that that doesn't mean there is a lot here and there isn't a great deal of direct competition

There are three free slips with two miles of the town centre and several pay to use ones.
The only thing really missing is a pontoon but there are two landing stages. There are sevarl marinas and chandleries plus other nautical types supply shops.
I find Oban a very good place to operate from and the best part is that what facilities there are happen to be all free

It's horses for course really, depends on exactly what is required, big city lights or countryside retreat. I use these terms very loosely when thinking of Argyll, obviously!

we've just come back and there is a nice cottage on Gallanach Moore farm about 2miles south of Oban near puffin divers. it has a slip next door fuel and air (if your diving).
the price was very reasonable.
at the cottage there is enough room for boats and also a hose pipe to wash gear down.

Thanks for all the advice, I fancy Oban because ive toured the Clyde and adjoining Lochs.

Looks like the cottages at Oban Caravan park is the place. Just need a mooring for the week possibly at Puffin, unless any one's got any ideas.

try ardoran marine. website is www.ardoran.co.uk - sheltered sea loch about 4 miles south of oban at the south end of kerrera.

We moor our rib there and its a great spot for touring - depends if they have any free moorings. Other than that, puffin might be able to help out or you might get one across the water in Kerrera....

Bruce's right Jono, and he should know.

I tend to spend as much time as possible in a floating tent in the middle of nowhere, so have a slightly different perspective when faced with a journey to the town. Nine thousand people (I think) in such a small space

I stopped up there in a place called Bender loch, BRILLIANT

Nice caravan park right on coast with its own slip way

Well recommened

We then took our Bomabrd 380 down to Oban

there are some small moorings between puffin and the caravan park, which seem to be sheltered, and other divers i have been with seem to leave their boats floating although i do like to take mine in and out the water as it is so easy and you can keep you eye on it.
when you going ?

In your position I would probably go for the caravan park at Benderloch (Tralee) they have chalets for rent, secure parking beside the chalet and a good private slip with trailer parking that puts you straight into Ardnamucknish bay just beside Connel.
Its about a 10-15min drive to Oban and about the same by RIB. The water distance is about 2/3rds the road distance.
If you boat was slightly shorter you would have been welcome to stick it in the drive and stay in Oban itself but its just a shade long for the available room.
There are vistors moorings at the Yacht club but they are £12 a night and I am not sure on availability.
When are you coming up? I may even have my own boat ready by then........
