Number Plates

So
My new RIB and trailer arrive in a few days time and I trot off to Halfords for a trailer number plate. Having had to do this before I equipped my self with the following documents:

Tow car V5 log book
Insurance Cert.
MOT
My passport
My driving licence
My house address latest telephone bill

After great deliberation by 3 members of staff, my request was refused due to lack of supporting documentation regarding my identity. (They wanted to see a 'utility bill' as the latest regs do not consider a telephone bill as adequate)

My work activities require me to attend sites where my identity requires confirmation. I have had no problems with the following sites using the above documentation:

RAF XXXXXXX (this is the one Tony Blair rushes to in the event of a nuclear alert). I have been inside the actual bunker.

Buckingham Palace
St James Palace
AWE (Atomic Weapons establishment)
Nuclear Bases in Scotland
Sellafield Cumbria
War Office
Whitehall
Air Traffic control
etc
etc

So it looks like you now need more supporting documentation to purchase eight black characters and a piece of plastic from a number plate shop. Bureaucracy or what??

So beware the requirements.

My real beef is that if a villian wanted a number plate he would simply make one. This makes the whole process daft as it is only the law-abiders that go through the process..

make a number plate!

Why would a 'thief' need to make a plate!

They would just steal it from a local car park.

I just bought a yellow number plate background and the relevant letters and numbers, stuck em on and stuck it to my trailer board. We also do this at work if we need to hire a van to collect or deliver things.

I have bought 2 new cars over the past year and have never had to show my documentation to the suppling dealership, and yes you can still buy the numbers only from our local caravan shop..

yes a few small minded shopes will get rid of there stickon letters soon enough , but look on any new car and the plate has the post code of the manafacture in it . p.s. £5000.0 fine for the maker of non legal plates now stickons are ilegal evan on trailers .why do you all not agree that a bit more effort from law abiding people will make it harder for theives and terroists

Second time I've heard of this from Halfords, will be going somewhere else on prinicple. I do not have a vehicle large enough to tow a boat trailer at the moment, how am I supposed to get a numerplate next time I hire a 4x4 to tow it?

Another subject, but annoys me just as much if it's true, I understand that S reg and later cars have to have a towbar fitted by a trained 'technician'. No offense to said persons, but I can work on any other part of my car brakes included but have to pay someone to bolt on a towbar!!! I hope someone will tell me this isn't true.....
