The SSR scheme is flawed in that you do not have to produce any proof of ownership. I heard a story of crooks registering a boat on the SSR several months before stealing it in order to have a 'history', also appears to date the boat in their possession prior to the 'theft'. The owner found his boat but couldn't prove ownership. Suspect he would have got it back in the end as it was still in the UK, if it had been abroad then it may have been a different matter even if it had been found.

I would be suspicious of a RIB for sale at a significant price but lacking in documentation - and if service history, bills, manuals, etc are lost then what other carelessness has the boat been subject to?

Our boat folder is stuffed full of the paper trail which shows the details of us and the past two owners.
