He got them filled at the Asian garage down the road.

I've heard of this from friends who race motocross. I've never had a problem even at tescos garage but I put the tank it the back of the pick up and leave it in there when filling it so it may look like I'm filling the truck up.

I think people are mixing up two issues here.

(1) there are restrictions on buying fuel in greater than 5L (plastic cans) or 10L (metal cans) which apply to most (or possibly all!) filling stations - as per their petroleum spirit license. Some places enforce this rule stricter than others - and if you search ribnet you will find suggestions how to overcome this (e.g. fill car first, pick pump not as visible from window, fill at back of car, or point out they are portable tanks not cans if you want a look of total confusion!).

(2) Garage owners have been asked (by the government) not to sell fuel in cans to anyone looking suspicious as part of its response to the riots. A number of garages have taken a "no fuel in cans" blanket ban approach. You presumably will look less suspicious if you are filling a boat/have the boat with you.

Fenlander -- I think you will find less of a problem in Scotland (as it rains too much for people to congregate and riot!). The more rural the filling station then generally the less likely they are to be bothered by (1) either! Closer to the water also means they will be more experienced with the issue. I don't want to do the local garages out of business but you should be aware that the more rural the more expensive (even worse than motorway services!).

Martin -- I don't know what the law is in the CI's but any business over here can refuse to serve anyone for any reason. Trading standards will likely tell you to go away - or indeed highlight (1) above - making it harder to get sensible amounts of fuel once the riots are just a memory.

One of the stations (I think it was a Shell) in the Fife/Lothian area definitely had notices up this week stating no fuel was to be dispensed into containers. I just assumed it was in case someone decided to buy 5l and send it down south by courier
