Next generation Pacific 24 Mark-4 for the Royal Navy

I got a press release this week announcing that BAE Systems have had an order for 60 new Pacific 24 RIBs. They'll be built at at Portsmouth Naval Base over the next four years and deployed on Royal Navy ships including Off Shore Patrol Vessels and the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers when they arrive.

They're being fitted with the 370hp V8 Yanmar 8LV engines which will be a bit of an upgrade from the old 140hp Mermaids in the old Pacific 22s! They're getting SHOX suspension seats too. The contract is worth £13.5m which by my maths comes out at an impressive £225k per boat.

Amazing amount of money to blow for what it is.

As soon as government contract is mentioned the price goes up!

Step down in power from the 6ly2a the old /current 24s run... 440hp. I'd bet the hulls will be a more complex composite / lighter to compensate though.😎

Look forward to seeing them.... Be interesting to see what Jet they'll run.

£225k is about what the old ones cost.... Bit of a bargain when compared to the £204k quoted price for an Atlantic 85

A lot of dosh and I am surprised they have not opted for twin 200 HP outboard diesel engines. The OXE outboards run on standard diesel fuel F76 - EN590 so no issue here. lots more space on deck whereas the V8 Yanmar engine will take up most of the deck of a 24' rib and you still have to fit a console and seats.

on second thoughts a twin set up could be too heavy for the transom as 320kg each engine

I'm a little surprised (but pleased) to see them opt for the Yanmar 8LV. It's not commercially rated, although there is a downrated 320hp version that is. In it's favour it is very light for a V8 and delivers a very large amount of torque across a wide (and useful) range of revs. It has an enormous amount of electronics associated with it - again, an odd choice for the armed services...

Having worked for a military subcontractor, I can say that while the materials used are not much more expensive than commercial grade, the testing, certifying, and other records keeping is what makes mil stuff pricey. Our HUD's for tactical aircraft shipped with about 4x the weight in paperwork.

HMS Clyde has a P22 sea boat, which mostly seems to travel around in a cloud of smoke. The new engine should wake them up a bit!

It looks like they are jets - so the engine will under the console and the helm stands over the jet / jackshaft. The hull would be deep enough to sink a fair bit of the Yanmar - it's not an overly tall motor.

By the time they've had to re-engine them to make up for the weight increase due to the ever changing / increasing specification, the £225k will seem like a bargain.
