Newbie questions and "how to" guide

Hi there,

I have no experience in boating (there I said it) but im thinking about getting a RIB to have fun in and take the family out. I have two small children and like the idea of cruising around Bournemouth, poole and Christchurch where I live as well as getting up some speed when the kids aren't onboard, maybe even buying a wakeboard, or day trips over to the isle of white.

Anyway like I said I have no experience. I would be looking at something big enough to sit 6 / 7 people and 70-115hp.

My question is, are there any recommendations for beginners guides I need to understand storage / moorings, maintenance, servicing, insurance, safety (although i'll probably do a power boat course) - and i imagine a whole lot more..

Pretty much everything you're worried about has been discussed (at length) on this site. May not be in one place, but a long session reading posts should get you more info than you wanted.

get some RYA training first. in doing that it will give you a good idea about size and power etc

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the site, I live in Bournemouth and RIB in all the areas you mentioned and theres a few of us locally who would be happy to help you out I am sure.

I would recommend maybe something smaller to start off with (depending on how deep your pockets are!)

Hi Dave, I'm in the same area and stared 9 years ago. Launched mainly at Wick (free) and Lymington (nice slip). Just moving to new rib next week as kids now not kids and want to do different things. Had RYA PB2 training the week I got the boat which was perfect for me, got to use the boat with the trainer which was helpful too. Have kept boat on the trailer as cheaper, now going to Parkstone Bay Marina as new boat is bigger and i want to get out more. After a lot of research this one seemed a good balance of convenience and cost.
