So. I seem to have passed test 1 . It went out now. I don't know whether this is going to one of you or just for all to see !!! I am going to need a sense of humour . I live in derbyshire the village I was born in is the furthest village from any coast line ! it's a mid life crisis . We bought the boat and we have just done the power boat two day course and are now spending money on getting it kitted out .

Good quality anchor of appropriate size for boat c/w chain & plenty of rope. Can be bought already made up. Be sure to lockwire any shackles.
Pack of flares.

Anchor chain and rope with boat don't know what quality . You have just got technical . Wiring a shackle is that to stop it unscrewing .

I am going to get cover off and have a look . I will ask this in the knowledge that most of you will laugh . The boat has been at mine for about two months and seemed fine . Last week the tubes seemed to go soft , not one compartment it seems all are . Is that temp related

Welcome to Ribnet, as others have said you will find lots of help, advise, and some wicked sense of humour here!!
Boat choice is a lot of personnel preference, but I think many would support you have made a good /sensible choice for a 1st boat (depending on exactly what you want to do with it of course!!)

Hope you have hours and hours of fun.... Here and on the water!!

Cheers did,a bit of research and it seemed like the right one for me. Like going to mull and jura and will use it for pottering about the isles whilst there . Perhaps fish a bit . I am miles from the coast but not that far from all of them !!

Pretty sure she started out on some very small stuff initially... ...gotta start somewhere and 4.8m is a decent size.

And there are numerous ways to wire shackles. I would say the most traditional is to use some stiff copper wire like the solid core you get in ring mains cable for the house. My experience of that is it works and never seems to fail. When you come to remove it you are easiest cutting the wire with snips. However, the wire ends tend to be sharp and will slash your hands if you aren't careful when the chain goes through them.

I tend to use a plastic cable ties they seem to last just as well and are less likely to chop your hands up (file the cut bit if need be) are easier to cut with just a knife if you ever had a reason to on the water and you don't have to wonder about two different metals in a salt water solution having some electrolytic action and weakening one. Someone will be along in 5 minutes to tell you why this is a bad idea... thats the great thing about rib.net you get lots of opinions and the chance to make an "informed" decision.

Do read the discussions on flares though. I think many are starting to feel a second more reliable means of signalling distress other than your VHF may be a more robust investment? PLB? Good article in Yachting Monthly ?this or ?last month on it... ...they point out a bucket of burning tar is an official signal of distress yet I've never seen a rib.net post recommend a bucket of tar. Yet its probably about as effective!!!

Make, Model, what have you already got - e.g. existing aerial, power etc or is it a blank canvas? Assuming its a fairly standard set and you haven't got a GPS to give positional data (you probably should get one though!) then you've only got power - two wires and aerial 1 coax wire to connect...

Monel seizing wire.

Either that or if you want t be abe to undo it at sea without pliers, use a cable tie.

Been out playing with it . The shackle had nothing to hold it so I have gone for the cable tie approach. Put air in tubes to see if it was just temperature
